Windows 11 Films & TV cant add my dvd files copied to pc

Really wanted to play then in the Films & TV App. But no good....
If you would like to extract the videos as .mp4 from the VIDEO_TS folder, then Handbrake can do that for you.

On a DVD there are usually multiple *.VOB files in the VIDEO_TS folder. Some will be for menu pages, the VIDEO_TS.VOB is the main menu. The actual video itself is arbitrarily split into 1GB .VOB files. In this example the actual video starts in VTS_01_01.VOB though to VTS_01_05.VOB.

If you open the VIDEO_TS folder in VLC, not the .VOB files themselves, then VLC will understand and play them all as a whole, just as if it were the original DVD, and complete with all its menus. Similarly, open the folder in HandBrake and it can read the Titles info and allow you to extract the video(s) from the DVD as .mp4 files, piecing together all the required parts of the .VOB files.

Open VLC
Media menu > Open folder > navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder
Select folder > away you go

As indicated above, some of the VOB files will be everything other than the video you want to play - menus, copyright warnings (sometimes in endless multi-language versions one after one after one ...., advertisements, etc etc - which you'll have to wade through before the video starts. In some case, these are "protected" so you can't fast forward or jump over them.

If you convert the DVD format to a single video, programs like MakeMKV will convert the DVD to a *.mkv video file and remove all the extraneous rubbish, you'll be left with just your individual video that you started out to watch.

There was an annoying change to the app a little while back so you could no longer play local files.

However, it seems MS have reinstated it - you click on personal tab, and add folder. However, I do not know how to play a dvd. The dvd files would need to be extracted by a dvd ripper into mp4 format.
Kodi and VLC will play DVDs but you need to extract at least to an ISO.

Slyfox (or is it now Redfox) will do this but it's paid software -- it will also "De-regionalize" commercial DVD's .

@Bree and and others and @polli

The problem is the DRM encryption embedded into commercial DVD's long before the advent of streaming and other delivery services. The regionalisation nonsense was due to the fact that DVD's used to be imported into different countries at different times --rather pointless now - and in any case computers will play NTSC or PAL (the 2 main TV standards pre lcd screens) without an issue. Paid software will include the library equivalent of libdvdcss which does the decryption - and it's not illegal in many including western jurisdictions.

Home created dvd's will work fine extracting the ts etc stuff but won't work with commercial DVD's.

Redfox software will extract to iso or video files (audio-ts and video-ts) with decryption removed as well as region coding so these will play on any device-- I've archived most of my old DVD's as ISO's - I can then also play them via firestick with kodi installed on remote TV's / computers etc - with the menus as well just as per the original. I still see the odd DVD from time to time.

Choose AnyDvd :

Screenshot 2023-05-15 093153.png

Previously manufacturers were really sneaky -- the old DVD players had a facility where you could change the region - this was done in the device's firmware and you could only do it 3 times !!!. Nobody thankfully bothers with that sort of Krap any more.

This is LEGAL software - intended for archiving and home playing of your own purchased video content on your own equipment - so by mentioning this software I assume it's still within Forum rules.

Thanks jimbo I found all that very interesting.
I don't really want to convert the videos as some of them of the family are a bit fuzzy anyway
Just memories I want to view often as I get older lol
So looks like am stuck with vlc but don't like the interface as much as films and TV
Is there a way to show in vlc all the videos to click on as having to find one at a time?

If you stick the videos in a folder then in VLC choose open folder from the media option.

I know it's not the best interface but it's free has almost any codec you need, can stream etc -- IMO the GUI interface as a price worth paying for the convenience of the product.

Be warned. Codec packs quite often make changes to the system that affect other programs.

I do NOT support or recommend codec installations under any circumstances - especially if you don't know how.

I'm surprised that VLC player won't handle your video files (I assuming they're not "raw" DVD files (*.vob, *.ifo, *.bup files) and have been made into computer video files (.*mp4, *.mkv). If not, you may need to rip the DVD contents to a video file format - MakeMKV is a good free program.

Once exracted and converted, many other freeware programs may help in converting the files to an acceptable form - simple programs like Handbrake or Vidcoder. When more experienced, step up to something like ffmpeg (command line) or AVIDemux

If VLC really doesn't work, then try Daum PotPlayer (freeware)

Never be tempted to buy, there is s-o-o-o-o free stuff around.
what about all the ones that are on ms store and are a click install with 0 anything else?

what about all the ones that are on ms store and are a click install with 0 anything else?
I still use Nero V7.0 from time to time on an XP (VM) system as I make bespoke vinyls and Mini Discs (yes quite a load still use those --more than you think !!). The Nero mega codec plugin pack (free) works fine -- there's nothing wrong with installing codecs if you know what you are doing,

I still need that XP system as it supports a Professional grade (Studio quality) minidisc recorder - still working perfectly, and studio vinyl cutting software -- which would cost me around 30,000 USD to replace -- and as it works perfectly why should I.

This XP VM system is still making me "Loads of Dosh" and is a great part time hobby doing this "Music stuff". After I've created the discs (finally Vinyl blanks are easy to get again) I do all the e-commerce etc stuff on W11 or Linux using a hosted provider so no security issues either.

As for the Ms store -- I don't think the entire universe is large enough for me to get away from it.

Cheers
