I have an old PC...

An old Intel i5-2500K build...

Its not compatible with Windows 11...

So during Black Friday, I bought some new parts to build a newer PC that will support Windows 11.

I've finally had a chance to put it all together, and ran the Windows Media Creation whatever tool to set up a USB drive to install Windows 11...

I got the new system all up and running with Windows 11 installed... and now I'm running into a problem.

It won't accept the Key from my Windows 10 PC... which I'm currently using, typing on right now... while the newer Windows 11 one is setting next to me running on a second screen...

Is it not accepting the Key because the Windows 10 pc is currently up and running?

Its not telling me its "in use" or anything its just telling me the key is invalid... but its from an oem copy of windows 10 that I bought from Microcenter years ago... I have no idea where the original packaging is though.

Thing is... I did this same thing last year on another PC... completely built a new PC to replace an old one that wouldnt support windows 11, and used the oem windows 10 pro key on that old one, that was also bought from microcenter, to activate the newer installation of windows 11, and had no issues with it... then installed the old ones original windows drive to copy files over, etc... then wiped the drive and used it to install some games on for the new one.

Thats what I'm trying to do with this current build.

I should add that I do not have a Microsoft Account associated with any of my home PC's... and I am attempting to do this without one.

I did it last year with my other PC, and it worked just fine and accepted the Win10 Key from the old PC it replaced; I just cant remember what I did to get it to work... but I seem to recall that I just typed in the Key and it accepted it.

Not all Windows licenses can be transferred and MS has tightened their policy on activation— the rules depend entirely on the license type. Retail license can be transferred. OEM license are tied to the hardware on which they are installed. For retail license, it's a matter of deactivating on the old machine, installing the same edition on new hardware and manually entering the key.

Microsoft no longer accepts using Win7 or Win8 licenses to activate 10 or 11 with a digital license.

Well I bought the Windows 10 Home copy from a Retail store... Microcenter...

I paid $100 for an installation DVD with a key code.

So shouldn't its Key work?

It worked with my other PC with its copy of Windows 10 Pro, that I also bought... from the same store.

If after de-activating it... and entering it into the Windows 11 PC.... if it still doesnt accept it, can I then RE-active this Windows 10... or am I then screwed with 2 PC's that I cant activate?

Yes, a Windows 10 Home RETAIL key should activate a Windows 11 Home installation. Use the activation troubleshooter.

I used the Activation Troubleshooter... it just says I "do not have a valid digital license or product key"....

Yet on this Win10 PC, it says it is connected to a digital license.

So I am presuming I have to DE-activate it on this Win10 PC, so Microsoft no longer see's it registered to any device?

Ok correction... I just clicked to run the troubleshooter again.

It says "we weren't able to activate windows on this device. You can activate this device by going to the store and purchasing a genuine copy of windows"

I then click close, and under System>Activation and "Activation State" ... it says that I dont have a valid digital license, etc.

So I am presuming I have to DE-activate it on this Win10 PC, so Microsoft no longer see's it registered to any device?
There is no such thing as Windows de-activation.

Hmm.. interesting... google says there is... even has a step by step guide for doing it with windows 11 through its security & update settings.

But for windows 10 it says its a matter of going into regedit and deleting the key and rebooting the PC so Microsofts key-finders no longer see's it .. but I wanted to be sure it was the right thing to do, before I do it and try using the key on this new Win 11.... and I was asking if there was another way to do it on 10.

There is no such thing as Windows de-activation.
Yes there is.
Here's how to deactivate Windows 10 or 11 and activate a new PC with the same retail key.

1. Launch a command prompt as administrator. You can get there by searching for cmd in the search menu and then right clicking the top result and selectin Run as administrator. Click Ok if prompted for permission by Windows' User Account control.

2. Enter slmgr /upk at the command prompt and hit Enter.
You will see a window that says uninstalled product key successfully.

Uninstalled product key

3. Enter slmgr.vbs /cpky at the command prompt
This will remove the product key from the registry itself, officially deactivating your PC. You will see a message saying. "Product key from registry cleared successfully."
product key from registry cleared successfully

5. Enter slmbr.vbs /dli to confirm that the product key is actually removed.
You should see a message saying that there's no product key. That means it's gone.

error: product key not found.

You will also see a red message on the Windows settings activation screen saying that your copy of Windows is not activated. But you don't need to check it.

windows settings activation screen

6. Now enter your product key on the new PC. If you haven't installed Windows on it yet, you can enter the key during the install process. If you already installed Windows but haven't activated yet, navigate to the Activation settings menu and click "Change Product Key" then enter it.
Click 'change product key'

If your key doesn't work at this point, either you need to wait and try again later in the day or get a new key.

How do I get in touch with Microsoft.. for some sort of "live help" ... without a Microsoft Account?

Every avenue I've tried so far has prompted me to login with a Microsoft Account.

The problem I'm having is I think this key IS an OEM Key; even though I bought it with an installation disc from Microcenter some years back....

I just googled up how to check what type of key you have and it told me to use "slmgr /dli" and that popped up a window that said my key was "OEM_DM"

But then... the other PC that I replaced a year ago, also had an OEM Key, and it let me use it.

So Im confused why its not working now.

I cant afford to buy a new key... I can barely work 16 hours a week due to medical issues, I can barely afford my rent as is... it took me forever to save up enough to buy the parts to build this new PC... and now I cant use it cause I cant activate it...

Cant use this current windows 10 pc either cause its so old it takes 5 mins just to load a damn web page.

The only thing I know to tell you is to take a chance on a third party seller selling cheap licenses. I make no guarantees, but some of us have had good luck buying cheap licenses here, if you can afford $9.97. (you get 15% off) This is for Windows Home.

There are also Windows Pro keys on the same site for the same price. One of those should activate with the key and upgrade your Home to Pro. If it does not, you would have to clean install Pro to use the key. I had a new Mini PC that came with Pro but it was a volume license that I was leery of so I purchased one and it activated as a retail license within seconds. However, know that I did register it using a Microsoft account so YMMV using a local account..Anytime one purchases one of these keys, they take a gamble, but I've used mine 6 months without issue..

Here's how to deactivate Windows 10 or 11 and activate a new PC with the same retail key.

(snip)
You can remove the activation from an existing Windows installation.

As far as I know, it's not communicated to Microsoft's activation servers. I should have stated that more clearly.

It's nothing like the de-activation that Adobe used in the past with Photoshop, where their license servers explicitly kept track of activations. You could de-activate PS on a PC, and use the key on another machine.

What are the chances that I could take the boot disk from this Windows 10 PC...

Install it into the new PC and have that PC boot up to this Windows 10 installation...

Yea sure it'll go through the whole process of recognizing a new motherboard, cpu, etc.... probably mess it up a bit...

But THEN, I could go into "upgrade your Windows" and it would finally recognize that "hey this windows 10 can be upgraded to windows 11 and the system specs are good!" then have it go through the whole process of "upgrading" to 11 and "keep existing files etc" and having it do a clean install of 11.

Technically, shouldn't that work?

Worth the risk I think for the low cost.
Thats definetely a good last resort option...

Though I want to try a more.. legit path first....

If Microsoft keeps insisting that I should "upgrade this exact PC" to Windows 11... I'll give them a chance to eat those words and put the boot drive from this PC into the new one; and have it boot to this Win10 installation on the newer hardware that supports 11.... THEN see what Windows says about upgrading it to 11...

Presuming that'll work?

Just because you bought a license key from a retail store does not mean it was a retail license key, they sell OEM keys as well and because of the price I would guess it's an OEM key and you already used it on the Win-10 computer it seems. If it was because it was already used you should have gotten a message that it was already used but you did not get that message so something else is up. Do what glasskuter said and buy another key if you want to personalize your OS. I ran mine for a year without activating. That's where I got my last key from and it works great
