Insider Windows 11 Insider Canary Build 25352.1 - April 28

  • Staff
UPDATE 5/04:

 Windows Blogs:

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25352 to the Canary Channel.

Starting with today’s build, Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel will notice that the name of the branch shown in the desktop watermark has changed to ZN_RELEASE. Just like we have done in the past, we can change which branch we flight builds from. As our engineers work in development cycles internally, we may prioritize work being done in a specific branch and may need to move Insiders between branches. We are treating these builds the same as we would treat builds from the RS_PRERELEASE branch. As a result of this change, Insiders will notice that some features have been removed temporarily. We look to bring these features back to Insiders in the future. And builds from the ZN_RELEASE branch should not be viewed as being matched to a specific Windows 11 release.

REMINDER: As builds released to the Canary Channel are “hot off the presses,” we will offer limited documentation for builds flighted to the Canary Channel (no known issues for example), but we will not publish a blog post for every flight – only when new features are available in a build. And like the previous Canary Channel build, this build has a few new features and changes to document.

Changes and Improvements

[Widgets]

  • We are beginning to roll out a new widget picker experience to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels with an image that gives a visual preview of the widget before pinning, a deep linking ability that allows users to jump directly to the picker from the provider app/service as well as a link to the widgets Store collection page where users can discover more apps with widgets.

    Updated widgets picker.

    Updated widgets picker.

For developers

You can download the latest Windows Insider SDK at aka.ms/windowsinsidersdk.

SDK NuGet packages are now also flighting at NuGet Gallery | WindowsSDK which include:
These NuGet packages provide more granular access to the SDK and better integration in CI/CD pipelines.

SDK flights are now published for both the Canary and Dev Channels, so be sure to choose the right version for your Insider Channel.

Remember to use adaptive code when targeting new APIs to make sure your app runs on all customer machines, particularly when building against the Dev Channel SDK. Feature detection is recommended over OS version checks, as OS version checks are unreliable and will not work as expected in all cases.

About the Canary Channel

The Canary Channel is the place to preview platform changes that require longer-lead time before getting released to customers. Some examples of this include major changes to the Windows kernel, new APIs, etc. Builds that we release to the Canary Channel should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows and some of the changes we try out in the Canary Channel will never ship, and others could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.

The builds that will be flighted to the Canary Channel are “hot off the presses,” flighting very soon after they are built, which means very little validation and documentation will be done before they are offered to Insiders. These builds could include major issues that could result in not being able to use your PC correctly or even in some rare cases require you to reinstall Windows. We will offer limited documentation for the Canary Channel, but we will not publish a blog post for every flight – only when new features are available in a build.

Our Canary Channel won’t receive daily builds; however, we may ramp up releasing builds more frequently in the future.

The desktop watermark you see at the lower right corner of your desktop is normal for these pre-release builds.

Thanks,
Amanda & Brandon

This birdie release updated just fine from WU (both on a W2GO type of device) and a VM. I'll migrate to a physical Windows laptop -- the w2Go system I made via the VM route initially copies OK to a standard internal HDD without the problems of thinking it's still a Win2GO system when cloned from things like those systems made by Hasleo (paid software).

Nothing broken on my system so far - or at least nothing that bothers me.

I believe though you can drop out of the insider build program -- the easiest way is simply to restore a backed up standard non insider build of W11 or install one from scratch. Whether it means you actually drop out or not is just a technical issue as the effect is the same -- in order to get insider builds on the restored / newly installed system then just don't link an insider build to an Ms account --then you won't be offered insider builds on that installation.

Finshed installing (on W2GO external SSD connected to computer via USB3->SATA. Updated from previous Birdie release).

No problems at all.

Installed via WU worked pretty fast-- didn't use UUPDUMP this time just went via WU.

Screenshot 2023-04-30 102705.png

Now cloning to a physical Windows laptop to internal SSD (actually Nvme)

Need later to install photoshop again as it was broken on the previous Canary release -- some video driver problem when cloning from a VM --not surprising but hardly Windows's fault !!-- now fixed. Otherwise it's all working correctly.

I'm surprised at how a load of people seem to be reporting poor performance with this build --I suspect there's something wrong with their disk drivers, disk I/O subsystem generally, extremely poor 3rd party anti viruis software or incorrect paging values etc.

I've found for a lot of these things just let Windows choose default values for these -- it usually works far better than "random tinkering" unless you know what you are doing.

Photoshop etc now all working properly and system migrated tp Windows laptop and a VM - so 3 copies -- 1) wintogo, 2)physical windows laptop and 3) VM on Linux host. Still using PS CS6 -- I'm not getting the subscription things -- also this version works good enough for what I need anyway.

I already read that notice . If you haven't read it I think you should. The notice was released after the 2500 builds were already released or to more precise, after a clean install was necessary if one wanted to drop out or switch to a different channel.

You could not drop out of Dev either, only Beta or RP. This is because Dev (and Canary) build numbers are always beyond the final release version - you cannot go backwards in build numbers.
In the past MS has opened the door to give us a change to switch to a different channel without needing to do a clean install. IMHO, MS should have given us the choice to stay in the Dev Channel or move to the Canary Channel. @Winuser Yes, but I don't think they're that on the ball when it comes to thinking ahead. The 25xxx builds started around a year ago, which is when they would have had to do it (meaning some weeks before that), because once on a 25xxx build you're marooned.

Their thoughts were probably more toward making new emojis then to give us the opportunity to switch channels if we wanted.

they could have just let the dev channel on the 25xxx and canary version upgrade them to 26xxx

Miracast still broken on Build 25352 like it was on 25346, they changed from RS to ZN Build, but they carried over the same bugs. 🤣🤐

Probably because many files are missing (screenshot below) from the last build.
Features now gone :

- Everything tied to MTestUx15 (no more pizza pie!)
(WASDK File Explorer, Gallery, new Home, new details pane, hide system tray date/time feature, start menu browsing history recommendations)
  • Access keys in XAML File Explorer context menus
  • Updated Simplified Chinese IME cloud suggestions
  • Ambient device lighting (RGB?) settings
  • Windows 365 Switch (to some extent?)

Thank you PhantomOcean3
Is there any way to change the ImageOverride (15)? Or is that another MS secret taboo?
All the features are Disabled and show ImageOverride (15). 😎😵‍💫🤷‍♂️

Yes this was a poorly thought out move but remember, even if you had remained on the old Dev build, you would have still checked in to the Hotel California.

You can only leave from Beta or RP. It has been this way for many years.

I always dual boot Insider Versions (in vhdx files) with my Host OS (the official release version). That way if something craps out, I can always clone release version and reupgrade.

The whole dev / canary idea is garbage as it is totally confusing why they out some features in one, and som in the other, and then make it worse with ridiculous A/B testing. In fact it is the latter that has pretty much made me consider whether I want to bother with Dev, Beta.

Going forward, I am thinking about sticking to Beta, and if a feature turns up I really want to try, I can simply copy my Beta Vhdx and upgrade as needed (takes no longer).

At the rate of really inane stuff (emojis, poxy widgets etc), I cannot see myself doing the above very often.

If I do get a Canardly or Dev build I wish to keep, I doubt I will upgrade it until a decent new feature comes along.

MS have really lost the plot!

Hi folks
I don´t mind updating a system for these builds at a REASONABLE interval but this is getting rediculous --I only updated a load of systems YESTERDAY -- now I've got this new zn release or whatever -- well I'll go for it - but surely there's got to be a better way of handling these builds !!!!

Skjámynd 2023-05-01 102905.png

If you annoy your testers -- especially if they are doing it for Free then it's lose-lose.

A lawyer friend of mine (yes even those people do have the odd friend or two) always says the ist thing they are taught on their first day at law college is "Never bore or annoy the Jury" -- Ms might like to adapt that advice for people using these builds and reduce the frequency -- if there's serious defects then there whole QC procedures need to be looked at -- as well as their regression testing (if they even know what that means).

Cheers
jimbo

I think MS made it clear that once in Canary, and now Dev, one would need to perform a clean installation in order to go back to a standard build.
Even if you were to opt out, your build number would still keep you checked-in at the Hotel.

I finished installing on my remaining NVmie hard drive (250GB). I figured it was better used than adding the drive to the RAID 0 array. Having time getting the boot menu for the Manjaro setup. Another day. Canary build of course.

Goot the boot menu with efibootmgr and set the timeout to 8 seconds. All is well with the desktop - back better than last summer when I almost died. Inappropriate to provide details so I won't

cheers.

@cereberus, IMHO, In the beginning the Insider builds were exciting and I couldn't wait to install the next build. Now they are boring and not really worth downloading. On my new desktop I do have two options if Idecide to leave the Insider Ring. I can use a very old image or do a clean install. Both options would require me to install and setup a number of programs. Some of the program I need to make sure I deactivate them first. I can do it but it takes hours getting everything setup and working the way I want. My old desktop and my laptop is easy to do a clean install. Most of the programs are free programs I downloaded.

Then Canary program has only just started. Wait a bit. I did not install on a hard drive for nothing (I hope)

I think MS made it clear that once in Canary, and now Dev, one would need to perform a clean installation in order to go back to a standard build.
Even if you were to opt out, your build number would still keep you checked-in at the Hotel.
MS should have left the Dev channel as it was and made switching to the Canary channel an option we had to choose if we wanted to upgrade. The way MS did it was in my opinion very ignorant. If MS wants us to test their builds for free, they should treat us better.
