Insider Windows 11 Insider Canary Build 25936.1000 (23H2) - Aug. 25

  • Staff
UPDATE 8/31:

 Windows Blogs:

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25936 to the Canary Channel.

REMINDER: As builds released to the Canary Channel are “hot off the presses,” we will offer limited documentation for builds flighted to the Canary Channel including documenting only the most significant and highly impactful known issues. Please note that we will not publish a blog post for every flight – only when new features are available in a build.

What’s new in Build 25936

Post-OOBE Experiences

We are trying out several new experiences for after completing OOBE (“out of box experience”) starting with this build. You may see one of these three experiences launched automatically on your device after completing OOBE.
  • If you choose ‘Development Intent’ within the ‘Let’s Customize Your Experience’ page during OOBE, Dev Home will be automatically launched on your device after logging in and reaching the desktop for the first time after OOBE setup.
  • If you choose ‘Development Intent’ within the ‘Let’s Customize Your Experience’ page during OOBE, the Get Started app will be automatically launched on your device after logging in and reaching the desktop for the first time after OOBE setup. The Get Started app will show you a personalized flow that will help you learn more about Dev Home and give you the opportunity to open Dev Home.
  • If you choose to ‘Restore’ your device during OOBE, the Get Started app will be automatically launched on your device after you log into your device for the second time after completing OOBE. The Get Started app will show you a personalized flow that will help you learn about key apps and settings, tell you that Windows has restored on your device and show you how to access your restored apps on Start menu or taskbar.

These experiences will help you learn about new features in Windows 11 and help you complete your device setup. These experiences will only be available to a small subset of Insiders in the Canary Channel at first and you may see different variations of these experiences.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Install and Update > Initial out of box setup.

Changes and Improvements

[General]

  • [REMINDER] Insider Preview Build Expiration: The expiration date for Insider Preview builds flighted to the Canary Channel has been updated to 9/15/2024 starting with Build 25931. Please make sure you are updated to the latest build in the Canary Channel.

[Dynamic Lighting]

  • We have added the ability to choose a custom color to light up your devices with.

[Task Manager]

  • We’ve updated the Task Manager settings page to match the design principles of Windows 11. The design has a similar look and feel to the Settings in Windows 11 and provides a cleaner UI separating categories into different sections. We will also be enabling this in the Dev Channel soon.

    Redesigned Task Manager settings.
    Redesigned Task Manager settings.

[Settings]

  • The end task feature under System > For Developers no longer requires Developer Mode to be enabled first before it can be used.

Fixes for known issues

  • Fixed the underlying crash which was causing .NET updates to get stuck requesting restart in Windows Update Settings in recent Canary Channel builds.
  • Fixed a few issues which were causing the End Task option in the taskbar to not work, or to close more than just the app you had selected.

For developers

You can download the latest Windows Insider SDK at aka.ms/windowsinsidersdk.

SDK NuGet packages are now also flighting at NuGet Gallery | WindowsSDK which include:
These NuGet packages provide more granular access to the SDK and better integration in CI/CD pipelines.

SDK flights are now published for both the Canary and Dev Channels, so be sure to choose the right version for your Insider Channel.

Remember to use adaptive code when targeting new APIs to make sure your app runs on all customer machines, particularly when building against the Dev Channel SDK. Feature detection is recommended over OS version checks, as OS version checks are unreliable and will not work as expected in all cases.

About the Canary Channel

The Canary Channel is the place to preview platform changes that require longer-lead time before getting released to customers. Some examples of this include major changes to the Windows kernel, new APIs, etc. Builds that we release to the Canary Channel should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows and some of the changes we try out in the Canary Channel will never ship, and others could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.

The builds that will be flighted to the Canary Channel are “hot off the presses,” flighting very soon after they are built, which means very little validation and documentation will be done before they are offered to Insiders. These builds could include major issues that could result in not being able to use your PC correctly or even in some rare cases require you to reinstall Windows. We will offer limited documentation for the Canary Channel, but we will not publish a blog post for every flight – only when new features are available in a build.

Our Canary Channel won’t receive daily builds; however, we may ramp up releasing builds more frequently in the future.

The desktop watermark you see at the lower right corner of your desktop is normal for these pre-release builds.

Until now, the only thing I tried was to set dhcp and dns adresses manually, trying to match those of the router - it didn't work.
This was a bold idea there but a doomed one I'm afraid. No wonder you are not getting on the web.
DHCP is set by your provider and gives you a dynamic IP, if you don't have a static one.
DNS can be changed by the user at the system level and is used to look up sites & IP addresses in the outside world.
When you are dealing with your own equipment, in your house, you are dealing with your own set of addresses.
When you go to the outside world of the internet, your router thru your ISP issues you an external address.

If I were you, I would reset my router to factory state and reset my network on my Windows system as well.
Best of luck.

There was an issue listed here:
  • After updating to this build, devices with mobile broadband connectivity may not be able connect to a wireless network due to an issue in which the APN configuration may get lost on upgrade. You can either add in the APN configuration manually as a workaround or hold off taking this build as we expect to have the issue fixed in the next flight.

It has since been fixed.

Yes, you're right.
Unfortunately, the router is a lease from my internet provider, which doesn't allow changing (or resetting) anything.
The only person allowed to to so is an authorized technician.
So, for the time being, I'll stay with the perfectly working build 25393, and try to install new builds in another SSD, as they keep coming.
In the meantime, I hope to stumble upon a solution somewhere.
Thank you!

You know if you are using DHCP, your network adapter settings should be pretty simple:
From Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections

Thanks! I understand.
What I don't understand is what exactly did Microsoft changed in the last builds; because I never had this problem before.
I wonder if it could be related to ASUS MB...

Canary builds are the most experimental of all builds.
They do come with their own quirks.
The answer to your question is in the posted notes from build 25921 linked above.

Given that this Build still has bug that makes Safe Mode unusable, I tried to isolate the source of the problems.
Turns out that disabling MTestUx15 eliminates the problem. Unfortunately, several experimental features are enabled under the umbrella of
MTestUx15 (id:42105254) and I could not isolate the specific feature that causes the problem. 😒🤷‍♂️
I reported this several weeks ago, but there is no fix in site yet. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😎🤷‍♂️

This is the 1st problem trying to get to Safe Mode, then it cannot login and the only way out is by restarting after Ctrl + Alt + Del.
1693115587610.png

I can eliminate the problem showing above by disabling MTestUx15.
vivetool /disable /id:42105254 /priority:service /store:both

vivetool /reset /id:42105254 (will restore the default enabled state)

Next 2 screens show when it is working normally, with and without internet connection (F5 or F4).

Still the problem of having to refresh desktop regularly as icons go all white !!!.

otherwise no issues with this build for me -- doesn't seem to offer anything radically or even mind numbingly boring new.

Screenshot 2023-08-27 072640.png

Kodi 20.3 works on it now without any problems. (I like kodi because as well as playing all imaginable codecs you can also use various iptc streams with less hassle than from other sources and have them all in one place).

Snipping tool also working properly on this build.

I'm running now off a wintogo system -- I updated via WU in a VM and then with Macrium from WITHIN the VM clone to external device. That way I get round the problem of new builds can't be updated on a Wintogo device. I also can clone the build for various languages etc so have several on a 1TB external device.

Physical drivers aren't an issue since I coned the initial physical build (quite a few builds ago) to a VM - added the vm drivers and then used that as a ref. system to update to relevant releases and simply clone back to the external device. The vio drivers aren't an issue on the physivcal system so I just leave them.

Activation is maintained also via this method. You might need to re-install the bootloader (bcdboot etc) - bcdboot z:\windows /s S: /f UEFI where z is the target physical disk (your wintogo disk) S is the name of the 100mb EFI partition. Run this from a windows install disk via repair system -->command prompt.

What's also good about this method (using a VM first) is that if something breaks or doesn't work you haven't wrecked a physical system.

cheers

The problem with the refresh is caused by the File Explorer feature WASDK. [40729001] (WASDKInFileExplorer)
If you disable it the problem goes away. This was also reported to MS, but they don't seem to listen. 🤐😂🤬

Hi there
that's all good and fine - but I really don't want to fiddle around with an OS where things will change at the next build -- if Ms keeps a handle on defects then they should be able to fix it but QC seems 100% lacking at the moment.

No need to fiddle with anything, I'm just trying to point out to MS where the new bugs are coming from. 😂😂😂😝🤷‍♂️

Does anybody else have GSODs 0a, DRIVER IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL? Those started to happen randomly after update. Mostly it happens when working with files, I move a lot of them between drives.

Any idea when this stuff will be fixed on this build (latest Canary build - W11 PRO).

After installing anything etc the desktop icons go all white

Yes, pretty annoying, they have this problem not just on Canary, you can add Dev and Beta to the list.
F5 on desktop will do the refresh too. 😎
Problem seems to be caused by the new feature WASDK added in file explorer. If I disable WASDK the problem does not occur.

I'd like to add a comment, continuing what I started above.
I was having difficulties connecting latest Canary builds to a Wi-Fi network.
Well, problem solved: I took this opportunity, and changed my internet provider to a cheaper one (and faster too).
Also changed the router: from a MitraStar GPT-2541GNAC to a Sagemcom F@ST 3895.
Now its perfect!
At least, regarding to this particular issue.
Cheers, everybody!
