Ok, I've cleaned up all WU garbage. Started Setup from CMD with dynamic update switch disabled. Now I got past that updating phase stuck at 2% forever but am now at installing phase 0% for one hour straight already.

This is total garbage.

Hi there

don't give up -- Linux works fine --but Windows is still "King" for some things.
However the most painless way without issues for updating Windows is still IMO to do :

1) Copy current "Physical Windows install" to a VM on Linux with KVM/QEMU as the Virtual software system.

2) Update the Windows guest via Windows update

3) mount your target Windows destination drive as a Physical disk in the VM

on KVM/QEMU add this to the Windows VM config file on the Linux system: (enable XML editing in the VM config file). If you need a GUI add package virt-manager.

E.G for arch-linux (similar to debian /ubuntu type of stuff - but infinitely less boated as you have to choose what you want to install so read the wiki --excellent BTW)

To add a "Physical disk" :

<disk type="block" device="disk">
<driver name="qemu" type="raw"/> [this mens guest physical I/O routines used and not "Virtual ones"]
<source dev="/dev/sda"/> [your partition / disk]
<target dev="vdb" bus="virtio"/>
</disk>

To get the GUI for creating a Virtual machine in QEMU/KVM on most Linux distros

You can also change CPU topology on the VM so Windows will install on even ancient equipment and if you want to use an "Emulated TPM" install package swtpm plus any extras e.g libtpm / swtpm-tools etc depending on your distro.

Clone the existing physical Windows system to the VM first --otherwise after cloning back to the "real Device" you' have to install a load of drivers again 00 "been there -- done it 00 bought the T-Shirt" -- 640 X 480 VGA on a 4UHD monitor doesn't look pretty !!!!/

I gave up since official release of Windows 11. It's all poop and becoming just more poop.
I don't have room for a 500GB VM... and and only thing I would need Windows for is for gaming and even that is questionable. Steam games works fine on Linux and I don't wanna stay on Windows just to play Minesweeper all day long, since that is pretty much all my laptop can handle when it comes to games.

Well, I am also on 26040, and I was so confused, that I wasn't able to update, „Windows update“ would crash in task manager and the settings page would be stuck at 0/1% downloaded and would be infinite loading if set to „disable updates for a week“.
In short, from my investigations, the reason why this happens is because the newest canary update (this one) is 94,8GB!!! and in short it corrupts your „SoftwareDistribution“ folder and causes your entire „Windows update“ to brick itself, to fix this, use „offlineinsiderenroll“, go to dev, delete that folder and you will unbrick your „Windows update“ upon checking for new ones.

Offlineinsiderenroll saves you from the California Hotel Syndrome. You can disenroll like whenever.

ArchLinux IMO is the best to install if you want to have control over software -- Add say KDE / GNOME / XFCE / MINT or any other GUI after basic install -- and it's simple now as ArchLinux has a nice easy install script -- after loading up the install iso just run Arch-install and follow the on screen instructions.

incidently just run arch-chroot before booting the installed system as this can test that your system works correctly. The proper setup is in the arch-root script on the install device.

It's simple to run VM's --install the KVM/QEMU stuff with virtmachine-manager if you want a GUI for creating / controlling VM's and if you do install a GUI desktop ensure you have console (or a terminal) installed together with network-manager. For network connectivity etc install openssh and samba whether you install a GUI or not.

I only basically use Windows these days for Office, some workplace apps such as SAPLOGON for accessing their SAP system and for SKYGO for watching SKY TV programs when away.

If I need a "Physical" windows system I just attach a nvme drive via usb-C connector as a "physical drive" to the VM and clone the Windows disk to the nvme drive. Then boot the "cloned" disk --and it's a great Windowstogo system with activation preserved. After booting just update drivers with drivers copied from an existing W11 machine and choose "install manually" from this computer. select the directory where you've copied the drivers to and ensure the include subdirectories is checked.

I've used Arch...its rubbish...too much work to get anything working. I might as well do LFS, do everything from scratch and have absolute control of every bit on my hdd. No, I am not gonna do that. I only want to install a distro and use it. Mint is fine for that. I just tried it on my laptop and every single thing on that machine works 100% in Mint, including my external USB-C touch display and its pen.

The amount of problems with hardware that I had using „Linux“ is just horrible, my 165hz monitor is „detected“ and shows as connected, but A. Feels like 30hz, says 165hz.
B. Is black, or has garbled lines on the screen, the „Nvidia“ control panel „Xserver“ has EVEN less options then I remember using „Ubuntu 18?“, also the fingerprint scanner doesn't work, though it used to in „Ubuntu 18?“, apparently that just happened on some „Linux“ update, and you have to install a sketchy driver which fails to install on newer „Linux kernels“...
My „Seagate Exos 7E8“ sounds like it is dying and takes 4min. to load in the file manager (This has NEVER happened in „Windows“, even during benchmarks). „Logitech“ hardware control is gone, not available, open-source versions don't work, even though „Logitech“ made them compatible on the „Open standard – Windows dynamic lighting“, gaming is a chore to get working, VMs have even more problems, with the fact that you lose performance and more. „Linux“ printers work if they have a wire, but if they are on a network? NOPE! (But „Android“ works 100% no driver needed).
In my personal opinion, the best „Linux“ is „Android“, which is not for laptops/desktops.
Also, the amount of times my system has been bricked by „Linux“ updates, „Fedora 38 to 39“, „GNOME Desktop“ GONE!
„Manjaro“? That thing was a mess, certificate errors? What a joke. „Arch“? Corrupts half of itself during installation, and when you have programs and you want to update or uninstall something, you better be happy with „Mac OS 3-8“ logic, because „Virtualbox“ is causing a conflict WITH EVERYTHING! Want to change a language? „VirtualBox“ has a conflict, etc.
„HDR“? „VRR“? „Auto HDR“? „Auto RTX“? „Super resolution“? NOPE! Unless you want to fiddle with experimental crap, which for some reason is „recommended“ by many „Linux YouTubers“, because „Nvidia“ drivers have a bug (Something, something „Zorin OS“ bad, because it includes the stable „Nvidia“ driver)?
„Linux“ users complaining about *.exe files and wizards? The most delusional people ever, a command prompt, which install a program to a location which... you can't choose, with feature packs which... you can't choose, including added language support which... you *might* be able to choose, sadly not much („Firefox“ defaults to English ALWAYS).
Also, don't you love not having drive letters? Because the mount directory is not consistent. „Linux YouTubers“ complaining about „OBS“ not „supporting Wayland“, even though many people report problems with „Waylands“ way of doing „desktop“ things, which are not compatible with the way software works...
And many, many more problems.

Mint is a great distro --especially for "ex" Windows users too.
I have to disagree about Arch Linux - no probs whatsoever - but that's what's good over Linux -- YOU have a choice !!!!.

As for Arch

I've really had no problems with it since "Pontius was a Pilot" !!

currently on an old Gen 6 HP envy laptop -- with the VM I showed (This laptop won't run W11 natively (CPU not supported) ) -- you can do it via dism /Apply-Image and use vhdx files but I can't be bothered with that.

It's only an 8GB RAM machine with 4GB used by the VM

so here's the basic Host characteristics

The VM is perfectly responsive even though it's a VM on a fairly modest machine.

Fedora is good to -- but a bit more unpredictable as their updates often break things.

But nothing wrong with MINT though.

I did not mean Arch is poop, it's poop for me. Too much hassle. And whatever Linux rant occurred a few posts up, it's not warranted. Most stuff works really well on any distro. That's just user error and ignorance. Need to learn more.

I always respect input from you -- there are a few on this Forum whose posts are always worth reading.

I do agree though Windows insider stuff seems to have lost its way -- DEV/Canary -- what a muddle -- having same build numbers for different products etc. You might just as well say "I've paid my Road tax to use the whole road not just half of it at a time".

Yeah, for one year now there's not been a clear direction except emojis, AI and cleaning pipelines.

What about moving all settings into Settings app or even better return everything to how it was in Windows 7. At least there one could open the widget directly to adjust some parameters rather than click 15 times, then scroll for a minute and click additional 25 times and you maybe find the widget that does the job.

EDIT: I just saw how to prevent Windows from installing drivers w Windows Update using the Group Policy Editor. I'll report back my findings.

Does anybody agree with me but posts going on about installing Linux and discussing which one to use is totally out of place in a thread talking about Insider versions (ask how to run in vms is ok). Something like the last 10 posts are about Linux.

To me they derail the thread and make it difficult to follow.

People who want to discuss Linux should set up a new thead elsewhere. I can see a case for some sub groups say in the Chillout room the e.g, for Linux enthusiasts, android enthusiasts, or dare I say even that company named after a common fruit,
