Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28000 to the Canary Channel.

What’s new in Build 28000​

[General]​

  • This update includes a small set of general improvements and fixes that improve the overall experience for Insiders running this build on their PCs.

[Versioning]​

  • With this build today, Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel will see the versioning updated under Settings > System > About (and winver) to Windows 11, version 26H1.
  • 26H1 is not a feature update for version 25H2 and only includes platform changes to support specific silicon. There is no action required from customers.
  • 25H2 remains the primary place for new features. Windows 11 continues to have an annual feature update cadence, with releases in the second half of the calendar year.
  • As a reminder, in the Windows Insider Program, new experiences will continue to land first in the Dev and Beta Channels, with Canary primarily focused on platform changes.

Fixes​

[General]​

  • Fixed an issue causing live captions to crash in the previous flight for some Insiders.
  • Fixed an issue which could cause the credentials window to not be accessible when trying to login to Outlook in recent flights.

Known issues​

[Start menu]​

  • Insiders with the new Start menu may experience it unexpectedly scrolling to the top.

[Power and Battery]​

  • We’re investigating reports that sleep and shutdown aren’t working correctly for some Insiders after the latest Canary builds.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel​

  • The builds we release to the Canary Channel represent the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows. Features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features may change over time, be removed, or replaced and never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.
  • Many features in the Canary Channel are rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as we monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • Some features may show up in the Dev and Beta Channels first before showing up in the Canary Channel.
  • Some features in active development we preview with Windows Insiders may not be fully localized and localization will happen over time as features are finalized. As you see issues with localization in your language, please report those issues to us via Feedback Hub.
  • To get off the Canary Channel, a clean install of Windows 11 will be required. As a reminder – Insiders can’t switch to a channel that is receiving builds with lower build numbers without doing a clean installation of Windows 11 due to technical setup requirements.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

It looks like I'm going to have the same problem with this update as I did with the last one. My desktop is stuck on the Bios screen with the spinning circle. It's bee there for almost 30 minutes. I don't need to use the computer so I'm going to wait awhile before hitting the restart button. I'm thinking an hour longer before using the restart button.

This one took a while for me!

These updates are sketchy, though..., sometimes your reg hacks get the axe, sometimes they don't! 🤷‍♂️

I ported W7 Sound Recorder over ages ago and it doesn't get kicked out! And that resides in System32, for crying out loud!

I waited until 12:20 and there was no progress so I hit the restart button. I got the Windows needs to to a boot repair as I expected. I'm now installing my Macrium image. While waiting I went out to my shed and brought my laptop out of sleep mode. To my surprise the laptop was already updated to 26H1. Maybe I should stop manually using Windows update and let Windows do it on its own.

Edit: My desktop is back up and running. I'm going to go ahead and try Windows update one more time. If that fails I'll try an ISO made with UUPDump.

No matter on which 25H2 compatible laptop I try to install the x64 version of 26H1, it keeps asking for a driver right at the beginning of the installation.
What am I missing here? WIll it not install on x64 AMD and Intel CPUs?

Surprisingly it was the fault of a Intenso USB thumb drive. Another USB thumb drive works now.

Googling reveals that indeed some USB drives can trigger the "you need a driver" message...hmmm.

Now with all the recent updates on Canary I have to use this DoNet35Setup.exe to repair .NET Framework 3.5 Preview for Windows vNext because it posts an error message after every Canary update. I have Applications that still require .NET Framework 3.5 to function properly.

They are testing on Dev with the .NET Framework 3.5 Preview for vNEXT, hopefully they will fix it on Canary too.
There are still way too many users that need 3.5 for older applications. 😵‍💫😝🤬🤷‍♂️

It looks like I'm not going to be installing this build on my desktop. I tried using Windows Update twice Now I'm trying an ISO I made with UUPDump. It's been stuck at the spinning circle for 4 hours. My laptop automatically downloaded the update and installed it without me doing anything.

@Edwin, My desktop is back to build 27982.1. When I first updated with this build I had the same problem except the second try worked. I'm not sure when but I may try restoring an older Macrium image and see if that works. If it wasn't for a couple of programs that I can no longer install I would do a clean install of 25H2 instead of staying on the Canary builds.

Nope - alternative name for Canary is "Hotel California" - you can never leave.
