Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28000 to the Canary Channel.

What’s new in Build 28000​

[General]​

  • This update includes a small set of general improvements and fixes that improve the overall experience for Insiders running this build on their PCs.

[Versioning]​

  • With this build today, Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel will see the versioning updated under Settings > System > About (and winver) to Windows 11, version 26H1.
  • 26H1 is not a feature update for version 25H2 and only includes platform changes to support specific silicon. There is no action required from customers.
  • 25H2 remains the primary place for new features. Windows 11 continues to have an annual feature update cadence, with releases in the second half of the calendar year.
  • As a reminder, in the Windows Insider Program, new experiences will continue to land first in the Dev and Beta Channels, with Canary primarily focused on platform changes.

Fixes​

[General]​

  • Fixed an issue causing live captions to crash in the previous flight for some Insiders.
  • Fixed an issue which could cause the credentials window to not be accessible when trying to login to Outlook in recent flights.

Known issues​

[Start menu]​

  • Insiders with the new Start menu may experience it unexpectedly scrolling to the top.

[Power and Battery]​

  • We’re investigating reports that sleep and shutdown aren’t working correctly for some Insiders after the latest Canary builds.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel​

  • The builds we release to the Canary Channel represent the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows. Features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features may change over time, be removed, or replaced and never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.
  • Many features in the Canary Channel are rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as we monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • Some features may show up in the Dev and Beta Channels first before showing up in the Canary Channel.
  • Some features in active development we preview with Windows Insiders may not be fully localized and localization will happen over time as features are finalized. As you see issues with localization in your language, please report those issues to us via Feedback Hub.
  • To get off the Canary Channel, a clean install of Windows 11 will be required. As a reminder – Insiders can’t switch to a channel that is receiving builds with lower build numbers without doing a clean installation of Windows 11 due to technical setup requirements.

But the point is that even in "Hotel California" you actually have to arrive first. Some posters just either can't get the update via WU or install (update not fresh) via the UUPDUMP ISO.

I've done both update and install new - and I'm not having issues with either. Laptop I'm using is a reasonable one - I7 Gen 11 @ >4GHZ with 8 cores, internal 512K NvmE (SSD type - with I suspect optane driver, and 32GB RAM.

No driver issues (so far). Also this build seems quite decently efficient -- running W11 Enterprise though which probably uses the 8 cores better with hyperthreading I suspect.

I'm not a hardware expert but usually just from a user perceptive I find the Enterprise versions are usually less bloated and seem to be more optimised as they are geared more for commercial users - I wonder if some of the SERVER code is built in to Enterprise versions -- although recently on I.T gigs the standard office stuff seems far inferior to what people have at home or on BYOD hardware.

I finally got my PowerSpec G156 desktop updated. I had to use a Macrium image from August. My two newer images wouldn't update. It is older but the only things I lost is a few program and Windows updates. I'm going to make an image then check for the updates.

As OAT says, that is what it should look like with the new Start menu enabled, but not everyone with 26H1 will have it enabled yet, MS are rolling it out gradually.

One curiosity, that Start menu folder is names 'X-Lite Tools'. As far as I know there is no X-Lite version 26H1 (yet).

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

The better custom builds strip out the bloatware, the spyware and optimise the OS to run better than stock.

Noticed they took down the link as malicious. I won't repost it but I will only note that people should be able to decide for themselves whether the software is useful to them, not people who think what's best for them, which is an arrogant attitude.

Thanks for that and sorry for the assumption. I see the problem on your second screenshot.
It looks like you have a partially enabled 'New Start Menu'.
I wonder if trying a Repair using Windows Update would help.
You could also try forcing the new menu by using vivetool or a reg key.
