Hello Windows Insiders, today we’re releasing a new optional update to the Windows 11 Insider Canary Channel, continuing our work to bring you early access to platform changes as they take shape.

As part of this ongoing development, Canary Channel will move forward on two update paths. This will help us validate platform changes at different stages while continuing to deliver new features and experiences to Insiders in the Canary channel.

What this means for Canary Channel Insiders​

Today, Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel already have available to preview Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1611. This build path will continue to focus on previewing new features and experiences in Canary for Windows 11, version 26H1, and moving forward will continue to be identified as a 28000 series build.

Available starting today, Insiders can take an optional update under Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates which will move your device to a new active development Build 29531.1000. Once you opt in to this path, future builds will be identified as 29500 series builds and newer. Please note, because of the focus on platform development for this path, you may notice a temporary loss in some features that you have today. These features will return to this new active development build.

Going forward, each Canary Channel build will be announced in its own blog post, so you’ll always know exactly what’s new—and what to expect—based on the build you’re receiving. You can always confirm which build you’re running by typing winver into the Windows search box and selecting About Windows. This will show your exact build number and version.

Choosing the right path for you​

We generally recommend that Insiders continue on the update path they’re already on, as this helps maintain stability and predictability within each build population.

That said, some Insiders—especially those who prefer getting the newest platform changes as early as possible—may choose to move to a newer development path when available.

This flexibility allows us to experiment, learn quickly, and incorporate feedback before changes move further along in development.

As a reminder – Insiders can’t switch to a channel that is receiving builds with lower build numbers without doing a clean installation of Windows 11 due to technical setup requirements. This means Insiders can’t go back to 28000 series builds after taking the optional update.

  • This update includes platform changes in moving to a new active development build.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel​

  • These builds can be unstable and may be released with limited documentation. Join Windows Insider – Get early access to Windows 11 features & updates
  • The builds we release to the Canary Channel represent the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows. Features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features may change over time, be removed, or replaced and never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.
  • Many features in the Canary Channel are rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as we monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • The desktop watermark shown at the lower right corner of the desktop is normal for Windows Insider pre-release builds.
  • Some features may show up in the Dev and Beta Channels first before showing up in the Canary Channel.
  • Some features in active development we preview with Windows Insiders may not be fully localized and localization will happen over time as features are finalized. As you see issues with localization in your language, please report those issues to us via Feedback Hub.
  • To get off the Canary Channel, a clean install of Windows 11 will be required.

You will still be able to continue with the 28000 series builds if you don't switch to 29531.1000.

I'm going to stay on the 28000 series and hope that later this year MS doesn't say thank you for helping us test the Insider Canary builds, now get the H*ll out of here and do a clean install.

That's why I'm staying on the 28000 series. I have had very minimal problems running the Canary builds on three computers. What does get to me is that I expected the Canary builds to get the latest features first. As it turned out, that wasn't always the way it turned out. I'm hoping that by staying on the 28000 builds I can continue being a Canary insider. If push comes to shove two of my computers running the Canary builds it won't be a problem doing a clean install. On my third computer I would lose a couple of programs I paid for because they are no longer available.

The 28000 series is specifically for Snapdragon X2 Series processors. While 26H1 will work on AMD/Intel processors it's a dead end as far as testing 25H2's future Windows upgrades are concerned.
Windows 11, version 26H1 is a targeted release that supports some of the new device innovations coming in 2026. That means that this release is not being made available through broad channels but is only intended for those who purchase these new devices. At this time, devices with Qualcomm Snapdragon® X2 Series processors will come with Windows 11, version 26H1.

....Windows 11, version 26H1 is not a feature update for version 25H2.

The 29000 series is back to calling itself 'Version Dev' which is usually Microsoft-speak for 'this may become 26H2 but we're not going to tell you yet'. :ROFLMAO:

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

But fails on Dell desktops XPS8930 and XPS8940 when it tries to boot it gets the blue screen with the message:
The digital signature for this file could not be verified
Error code: 0xc0000428

Those 2 Dell machines fail also booting from the USB installation media created for this Build. The same USB boots fine on GMKtec PCs, but
fails the same as Dell with a Lenovo Yoga 920 trying to boot from the USB installation media with Build 29531.1000.

This problem started already with 28020.1546, carried over to 28020.1611, and now much worse with 29531.1000.

Looks like the Secure boot on some machines cannot validate the Microsoft Development PCA 2014 certificate without the Microsoft Windows Production PCA 2011 certificate either in the embedded signature or the Catalog signature.

Do you have a link where MS said that the 28000 series is only going to be for Snapdragon X2 series processors? Unless MS says we are leaving all Canary build tester with older systems out in the cold, I'm going to hold on to the belief that MS is going to do the same thing they did when they ended the Skip-Ahead builds. Those that didn't want to drop out were moved to another branch and weren't forced to do a clean install.

The 29000 series appears to be Microsoft's way forwards for those of us with non-Snapdragon X2 systems. Why else would they now offer us two Canary channel branches?

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.
