Windows 11 keeps kicking me back to the Login Screen

Windows 11
I'm having a problem where Windows 11 keeps kicking me back to the Login Screen after a couple minutes. Basically, it lets me log in. I can play around for a bit, open programs, go in the settings, etc, but soon enough my monitor flashes black and I'm back at the Login screen again. I noticed that the problem seems to occur even if I don't login at all. If I even idle too long at the login screen, the same thing happens. The problem doesn't happen if I restart Windows with safe mode.

I'm running the 21H2 version right now. I realize I'm running this with a i7-7700k but I don't think that's the problem. I just updated my computer to Windows 11 using Windows Update by being a part of the beta Windows Insider channel.

Anyone else have this problem?

What are your timeout settings for locking Windows and screen off? Are there any third party screensavers installed? When it happens, does it log you out (session terminated) or is the computer simply locked?

Check Reliability Monitor and see if you are getting errors at around the time you go back to login. There might be some clues in there...

I ended up reverting to Windows 10. I just couldn't have my computer in an unusable state for that long. I plan on reinstalling and seeing if I can figure something out on my next day off hopefully though. A couple other points though:

I don't think it has something to do with the timeout settings because it seems like it happens at a different rate every time. Sometimes it logs me back out in a 20 seconds. Other times it takes a couple minutes. Plus, the same problem still happens whether I log in or not. If I just idle at the login screen, sooner or later the screen blinks black and the cycle starts again.

Did you ever sort this issue out Solaman? I tried to update to window 11 last night and was experiencing the same issue.

I am having the same issue. The first time I installed win 11, it was actually putting the PC into sleep mode (shutting off). When I rolled back to 10 and removed several Apps from starting, and then reinstalled 11 - I begin experiencing the same problem - windows puts PC back into Login screen every time (as if it was a screen saver, but screen saver is OFF).

The Reliability Monitor shows 2 failures: Windows Explorer and Settings stopped working. The strange thing is that I can open them during the short period before it kicks me out, and they seem fine.

Just performed the update via WU, and 30 seconds after logon the screen blanks. Esc or mouse click bring up the logon screen. No change after multiple reboots.

Did an image restore and Win 10 is running fine. Will try an update from ISO next weekend.

Yes, restored win 10 was running fine. After I ran Win 11 update I found the following solution. The root of the problem is the sleep mode. Whenever it is set to any value, windows start kicking you out randomly after a short period of time (seconds). To stop this behavior, do this: right-click and choose Personalization -> Screen timeout -> Screen and sleep. For the option "When screen plugged in, put my device to sleep after" select "Never". It will stop random sleep mode kicking in.

Thanks, I will try that next weekend. Must be a bug with a Desktop as it does not do that on my laptop.

Win 11 was reinstalled as planned, and sure enough, changing this setting has stopped the desktop going to sleep after about 30 seconds.

This is a strange bug, and will monitor to see if there are any other impacts. Not sure that I am happy about the PC not going to sleep though.

Thanks for the tip.

I was not happy leaving to desktop in full power-on mode 24 hours a day. The PC is never turned off so this would be an ongoing issue.

Enter research and debug mode. The premature sleep situation does not come up as a known Win 11 issue so there must have been something unusual going on. First tried all sorts of registry changes to the PowerSetting without success. The problem did not exist when booting into Safe Mode so that suggested that it was a driver or services issue. Turning off many Startup Services via Task Manager did not help. Finally used msconfig to do a clean boot with services turned off, then turning on a group at a time until the problem went away. Then it was down to one at a time.

After countless reboots the culprit was identified Intel Ready Mode Technology service/app. This service had not consciously been used when Win 10 installed, but it does not coexist properly with Win 11. This problem would not have existed if a clean install was performed but wanted to avoid the involved task of reinstall and configuring many apps.

Disabling the "Intel Ready Mode" Service solved the problem of screen going black and logging out on HP Pavilion 27 All-In-One PC from 2019 - the problem started only after the upgrade to windows 11.

The Intel site indicates that this product was removed due to security exposures. An advisory should have been issued via the Intel Driver & Support Assistant.

I do miss the always ready state as part of enhanced sleep mode (not available in Win 11) as my laptop data is sync'ed to the AIO. I now need to run WOL to wake it up before doing the sync.

Thanks for the information on Intel Ready mode. I previously turned sleep mode setting to never so I could keep my computer from going to sleep every second or two. Then I found the note on Intel Ready. I turned it off on my HP Pavilion all-in - one and it solved the problem of continually logging me out. I then went back to rescheduling sleep mode.

A similar problem had me baffled for a while. Sometimes when I left the room, my laptop quickly went into sleep mode. Sometimes it didn't. In my case it turned out to be "Link State Power Management", default setting is ON. I had linked my cellphone via the "your phone app". Sometimes I took my phone with me, sometimes I didn't. Same could happen with bluetooth headset or other linked device. When the Link State is ON, and you walk too far away, your computer will go to sleep very quickly. Solution: Control panel; Hardware & Sound; Power Options; Change Settings; Change Advanced Power Settings; PCI Express; Link State Power Management: Set to Off. Your other power management settings will remain in effect.

Instead, try turning Dynamic Lock off (Settings, Accounts, Sign-in options).

I have discovered that my Smart Watch magnet was causing this to happen to my laptop. I now take off my watch when using that laptop and it's stopped happening.
