I know it's not uncommon, but the Windows 11 upgrade has messed up my partitions.
I now have two recovery partitions and a 1 MiB free space partition which some Windows apps don't display.
I guess there are others with the same issue.

Gawd. I remember this shenanigan happening years ago, I thought they stamped that out - you would have thought that wouldn't happen anymore. I don't have that issue thank goodness. Is this from a new update from Windows 10 or from a repair install?

I believe the last recovery partition is correct. You could blow away that first recovery partition and use that to expand the size of your C: drive partition.

You sure that wasn't there under Windows 10 before moving to 11? And did you do a clean install?

I have both those partitions on both 10 and 11 drives. My Disk Management.PNG

What you are seeing above on the "Win 11 Beta (C)" is a cloned drive from the Win 10 Pro drive. Note both drives have two recovery partitions. The point is the Windows 11 drive was cloned from the Win 10 drive, and the partition was "already" there. Meaning this is a remnant of Windows 10. The only thing I noticed is the last partition was increased by nearly 100 meg.

That said, I did the Win 11 Insiders install via the Dev channel.

Yes, it definitely happened after the Windows 11 upgrade.
I keep a close eye on my partitions.

Reagentc /Info is showing that the current partition is the active one.
Plus as you can see, there is not much in the first one.

Like I added. Just blow the first away and expand C: into it.

Which reminds me of a question I had. I made a backup of Windows 10 with Macrium reflect before I started all of the 11 nonsense. But I did not backup the recovery partition. I assume that has been overwritten with Window 11 recovery, so I can't go back. I would be OK with that because I use backups for recovery, not the recovery partition. However, I believe Macrium builds its boot recovery from the recovery partition. So I might be a bit screwed there. Sigh. No going back I suppose.

Blowing up partitions is hit or miss without a way to undo it.
You can safely get rid of those partitions if you have a macrium image of that install. If you have time to do a trial and error of restoring only the partitions you think you need and then extend the last partition to occupy the remaining space before executing the the image restoration. I did it before.

Uh, no. That first partition is useless. And it is not "blowing them up". You can use PC -> Manage -> Disk Management or better minitool partition wizard to do this. The only issue may be the location of the EFI partition. sandwiched between the old recovery partition and the C: partition. I think the OP is savvy enough to know how to do this .

All fixed. But I don't know of any Windows partition application that will do it. MiniTool Partition Wizard or Easeus Partition Master certainly won't
I used TeraByte BootIt UEFI. It gives you the flexibility to resize and move (slide) partitions outside of Windows. I also removed the free space that most Windows applications cannot see.
But @geneo is right. This shouldn't be happening in 2021 with Windows 10 or 11.

This is how it should look.

Another way it possibly could be done is to do a macrium reflect backup of C: + RE then restore them to the beginning of the drive. There might be some issue booting that Windows repair could probably fix.

I would have thought you could do this with partition wizard by deleting the first partition, then moving the eFI partition to the front of the drive, then expanding the C drive into the 450MB vacuum. But I could see that being an issue. Been a long time since I had to fix that and I couldn;t tell you how. LOL.

I figured you could sort it. (y)

main reason there can be two is the original one isn't big enough and windows creates the 2nd one as extra space. The new one adds itself as last partition as its special, its only partition that can expand forwards as well to give itself more space in future, it steals off the windows partition.

Maybe you could prevent it happening if you expanded the original recovery partition prior to upgrading Windows.
I'm not sure if it would work like that. You'd just have to try it.
Microsoft could also create one larger than necessary to prevent it happening.

You sure that wasn't there under Windows 10 before moving to 11? And did you do a clean install?

I have both those partitions on both 10 and 11 drives. View attachment 5968

You're booting from more than one disk drive. And yeah, you have multiple recovery partitions.
As I said earlier, you can easily find out what your current Windows installation is using by typing: Reagentc /Info at an elevated terminal window. The other redundant one can then be safely deleted.

Newer versions of win 10 & 11 should just create it as last partition so it can resize itself if needed. No need to worry about its size before installing updates, hard to resize it in most cases as EFI will be right behind it. Its why they make a 2nd one, they would resize automatically if they could.

I have a 1tb samsung NVME with 10% of drive set as unprovisioned, I wonder where windows would put a new partition if it needed one, probably between C and unallocated, interesting (to me) question would be where would it get its space from, C drive or unallocated.

guess I may never know.

For that to happen, the Windows installer would have take space from another partition to be able to expand it.
I guess you're saying that is what it does.

Actually, this was always going to happen as your partition laayour was old style before the upgrade i.e. the winte partitiin was before the C drive. A couple of years back, the order was changed so the winre drive was after the C drive, as the problem was the winre drive is no longer big enough.

Infortunately, it was not a simple matter of moving everything as the small MSR partition is not moveable even with partition tools.

The way round it is to backup pc using Macrium Reflect free, and restoring in following order (using drag and drop)

1) EFI
2) MSR
3) C drive
4) WinRe
5) Data Partition

Then reactivate winre using reagentc command.

The on future, the issue goes away.

Nope - you cannot expand it due to the hidden immovable MzsR partition. It was not Windows 11 that did this. The same would have happened with a major W10 upgrade.
