So i bought a gaming laptop with windows 11 Home pre-installed and activated but I wanna upgrade to windows 11 Pro (to use sandbox/hyper v)

do i need to buy/use a OEM pro key or a Retail one and will it work ??

and yes it came pre-installed from Asus so sure is a legit OEM version but I'm not sure which one to purchase to upgrade to W11 Pro, retail or the OEM ??

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

It's one of the things I like better with Apple over Windows. There is just 1 version, not a pro, home, education, enterprise, etc.

OEM key, you can't transfer it to another machine, and you don't get any help from Microsoft. If you get another machine, you get another license.

Retail key, you can transfer to another machine, just in case you sell your laptop.

Getting "help" from Microsoft may not be any better than getting help from a forum like this, so the question is, are you planning to replace your machine "soon", or maybe upgrade your machine in a way that Microsoft no longer considers it the same machine?

You probably have an OEM licesnse, you can use either an OEM key to upgrade or a retail key. If you want to use Pro only for a few days and then return to Home, you don't need a standard key. Just use the generic Pro key to upgrade. Last time I checked it won't let you use the generic Pro key to upgrade if you are connected to the internet. Disconnect from the internet, click Change key and copy-paste the generic Pro key. Then connect to the internet again. You have 30 days to use Pro before you must activate. When you want to return to Home again, disconnect from the internet, change key to the generic Home key and it will downgrade. Connect to the internet again to automatically activate Home using your digital license from Microsoft servers.

Generic Pro key: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

that's a really good suggestion thank u so much but then again i wanna use hyper V/Sandbox permanently and dont want the hastle of upgrading and downgrading every 30 days

If you use the MS Store, it's possible you'll get the Enterprise version. That's what happened to me. I called MS and the tech told me to use the generic Pro key to switch. On another note. I didn't get a new key. The update was done automatically through the store.

Mac OS versions will eventually be obsolete and not run newer applications. Some years ago minimum requirement was Mac OS 10.6 then 10.12 now 10.15. At least in Windows 7 you still find plenty of applications and games to use. The exception is newer browser versions and Office versions. Also Linux is not that easy to use if you want more than launching a browser and surfing the internet or typing the occasional document. Not to mention both Mac OS and Linux support much fewer devices and applications than Windows, so neither is a true replacement of Windows for the average PC user.

Summary: You want a RETAIL key. OEM keys are technically only available to OEMs.

Not exactly, some very cheap Windows 10/11 keys are OEM keys sold separately from hardware. This violates EULA but they never tell buyers.

True, but I am not entertaining things that violate the EULA. My suggestion was a "Best Practice". Besides, you really want a retail so that you have the ability to move the license in case your computer emits magic smoke.
