Hi Guys,

Just dealing with a few issues with Windows 11 24H2 - prior to possibly upgrading a couple o my older PCs from 23H2...

The older systems were originally installed with Windows 10 and were upgraded to Win 11 22H1 a while back and have since been updated to 23H2.

The disks that have the OS installed are all MBR-type partition-tables and this hasn't been an issue at all. But looking at some 24H2 installation/upgrade instructions, it seems that the disks must by GPT partitioned.

Can anyone please confirm this?

Correct, anything else isn’t worth the effort.


You cannot (without most likely issues) directly install Windows 11 on an MBR partition. Windows 11 requires a GPT (GUID Partition Table) partition style, as it relies on UEFI firmware for booting and features like Secure Boot. You can either convert the MBR disk to GPT or install Windows 11 in Legacy BIOS mode, which is not officially supported by Microsoft and may have limitations.
  • Windows 11 and GPT:
    Windows 11 is designed to work with GPT disks, which are the modern standard for hard drive partitioning. This is because Windows 11 requires UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) boot mode, and UEFI works with GPT disks.

  • MBR and Legacy BIOS:
    MBR (Master Boot Record) is an older partition style that is associated with legacy BIOS firmware. While Windows 11 can recognize and access MBR partitions, it cannot be installed on them directly.

  • Converting MBR to GPT:
    You can convert an MBR disk to GPT using tools like Disk Management, third-party partitioning tools, or command-line tools. However, this process will erase all data on the disk, so be sure to back up your data beforehand.

  • Legacy BIOS Installation:
    You can install Windows 11 on an MBR disk by booting into legacy BIOS mode during the installation process. However, this is not an officially supported configuration and may have limitations with features like Secure Boot.

Well, you can still run W11 on mbr systems but you need to go through some loops as mbr does not support secure boot.

There is no guarantee that using W11 on mbr will always work properly.

The only total 24H2 restriction is some really old pcs cannot run on 24H2 due to a change in chipset needs but this only applies to some pcs over 15 years old (but pcs that old are pretty useless anyway).

In the end, your best option is to update to UEFI as it is more secure and does not suffer all the mbr limitations, particularly 2TB and 4 primary partition limits.

I think creating the install media using RUFUS will allow you to install Windows 11 on an MBR partition. I advise against it though.:

You can install Windows 11 on an MBR partition using Rufus, but it requires a few steps. Rufus allows you to create a bootable USB drive for Windows 11 and configure it to target an MBR partition style. This is necessary if you have a system that uses a legacy BIOS or an older motherboard that doesn't support UEFI.

  1. 1. Choose MBR in Rufus:
    When using Rufus to create the bootable USB, select "MBR" in the "Partition Scheme" option.

  2. 2. Disable TPM and Secure Boot (if needed):
    If your system doesn't have TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot, you'll need to bypass these requirements. Rufus has an option to remove these checks, allowing you to install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware.

  3. 3. Boot into the USB drive:
    Ensure your system is set to boot from the USB drive. This may require accessing the BIOS settings and changing the boot order.

  4. 4. Install Windows 11:
    The Windows installer will then format the target drive as an MBR partition and install Windows 11 in legacy BIOS mode.

Greed, but it does still work with Legacy BIOS / MBR. I just tried it and had no difficulties.

Rufus isn't the only way, the registry fixes in this tutorial also work. Bypass Windows 11 System Requirements on Unsupported PC

This is a clean install of 24H2 on a 14 year old Legacy/MBR laptop.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
While I can see that you can install on this ancient hardware, the obvious question is should you?

Here is my take on that matter:

Let's forward to October and assume you currently have Windows 10. Since Windows 10 is going out of support you have a few choices:

1) Continue to run Win 10 with no security updates.

2) Pay $30 for a year of extended support ($60 in year 2 and $120 in year 3).

3) Run Linux on it (gag me with a spoon) :-)

4) If you want to run a version of Windows that has ongoing security updates and continued development, you have no choice but Win 11.

To me, option 4 is the only one worth considering. But that's just me. YMMV.

EDIT: I should add that I run Win 11 exclusively now, even on my ancient 13-year-old hardware and it runs better than 10 ever did :-).

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I should mention you can convert from MBR to GPT without data loss. Having done this in large enterprises a couple times, I would definitely backup your data first.

You cannot (without most likely issues) directly install Windows 11 on an MBR partition. Windows 11 requires a GPT (GUID Partition Table) partition style, as it relies on UEFI firmware for booting and features like Secure Boot. I just converted my C drive with Windows 10 on it from MBR to GPT and lost no data whatsoever. I used Ease freeware, no problem.

That’s great, but to do it without creating a system image and backing up your system first, isn’t advised.

You can use Microsoft Tool to convert whole Windows OS in MBR to Windows OS in GPT. But it is always advisable to have a backup just in case something goes wrong, power outage, etc.

For what its worth, Rufus does have an option to create a bootable Win 11 USB flashdrive, specifically for legacy PC motherboads with either BIOs-only capable MBR partitions, OR even legacy PCs with motherboards with BIOS & UEFI capabilities , too.

I dual boot with XP & Win 11, on several legacy notebooks, (some with BIOS only motherboards & some with both BIOS & UEFI capabilities) with all of these legacy notebooks with just MBR partitions
