I have a desktop computer running Windows 11 PRO 23H2. I would like to install 24H2 -but have a question. My internal SSD drive is NOT encrypted with Bitlocker. When I install 24H2 will it automatically encrypt my internal drive? If so, is there a way to stop this from happening or to turn it off?

As far as I know it won't if you do an in-place upgrade but will with a clean install

Not unless you ask it to, Bitlocker is strictly optional. I recently installed two computers with Win11 Pro, and when I updated to 24H2 I didn't get any mention of Bitlocker.

If you use Rufus to prepare the USB install drive, it has an option to disable automatic Device Encryption. Or you can disable it with a reg command for upgrades:
Code:
reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BitLocker /v PreventDeviceEncryption /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

I did nothing when I upgraded to 24H2 and I was not automatically encrypted.

Clean-installing Windows 11 24H2 may soon result in the operating system encrypting your drives without asking. In this video, i will show you how to prevent Windows 11 from encrypting your disks during installation.

You didnt answer the question asked. It's obviously not a clean install, which is why I posted what I did.

I do admit, it sucks they're doing that on a clean install. I bought fast NVMe SSD drives for speed, not to have Microsoft put an anchor on them!

BitLocker encryption can lead to a noticeable performance impact, especially on SSDs, with some reports suggesting slowdowns of up to 45%. This impact is due to the encryption process adding overhead during read and write operations.
