Solved Windows 11 Pro x64 occasionally prompts for activation, after almost 2 years of service!?

Have you called Microsoft Support? If you explain that your old disk died or you were infected by virus and you reinstalled Windows (or some other reasonable excuse), they might be kind enough to help you activate. In worst case you buy a new key, it's not the end of the World.

If you have linked to your MS account then you should be able to restore activation with the Activation Troubleshooter.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

You have to login with your Microsoft account to activate, if you have a local account it must be converted to Microsoft account using your credentials.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't understand the relevance of your previous post. I haven't replaced my disk nor (to my knowledge) had a virus infection. IAC, I haven't been able to get through to MS support (see my previous reply, post #17).

You have an OEM key and Windows is in notification status (asks for activation). I also see the key is blacklisted (marked as non-genuine). So the only way to activate legally is to change the key. Whatever else you do it won't activate with a blacklisted key.

The key was evidently not blacklisted when I bought it (September 2023) and I haven't used it on another machine or passed it on to anyone else.
I would like to first give the seller (a Microsoft Certified Partner) to respond.
If I don't hear from them, I will be happy to report this to Microsoft.
The seller gives the e-mail address [email protected]. Is that the appropriate way to report this?

Try and change key to the Generic one and then go to activate for the product you have . The Generic keys are all on google. These are the ones Ms itself provides so the product can be installed -- one needs to activate afterwards..

Thanks, but won't this kill any chance of activation? Earlier on this thread someone said that an OEM key cannot be used more than once.

If the computer has a digital license on Microsoft Servers, then it will activate with the generic key. However, in your case I am not sure if the digital license is still valid. If Windows thinks it's not the same hardware, then it might not work. I would wait for the Seller's response. He might give you another key and help you activate. If he doesn't help or even worse, never reply, I would call Microsoft to activate and report him.

That resulted in rejection, I was forced to enter my product key again, when I wasn't required to for many months. It was activated with that method in 2022, IIRC. IIRC, it was the same motherboard, too. (ASRock B550 PG Velocita)

So in my case, it was not a blacklisted product key, of course.

This looks like an increasingly common issue. Did Windows really think I changed my motherboard, because I changed the SSD?

The hard drive(s) play no part in the hardware ID that identifies your PC to the activation servers.

The Windows 10 and 11 Digital License is based on HWID 3. As long as the Windows edition, motherboard and CPU remain the same, once the computer has been activated, all future clean installs with the same edition on that computer will activate automatically. Note that all HWIDs exclude storage media entirely.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
Why was it lost when I changed the SSD, more than 365 days after upgrading to the Ryzen 9 5900X?

The CPU upgrade was on Christmas, 2023. The SSD was changed this month.

IIRC, I got a BIOS update in early 2024 or around there. It was for a security flaw. The "LogoFail" bug.

It feels like a "delay-ban" to me, wait many many months to place me on an activation ban. But of course, I was allowed to activate again after reentering the product key.

You might have activated again in the past and because it is an OEM key it locked and cannot be activated again.

My license is retail. This happened on the daily-driver. I just had to look for my retail product key, which I have on a photo, on my Galaxy S10+
