During the Microsoft Special Event, Microsoft announced Windows 11 version 23H2 will be available September 26, 2023 as a free update.

This will be an optional C update for Windows 11 version 22H2 coming September 26, 2023 at 10 AM CST / 12 PM CST. You will automatically get this update if you have Get the latest updates as soon as they're available turned on. If turned off, it'll be available as an optional update.

Windows 11 version 23H2 won't be available until October 2023 (Q4).

If you watched the video it was said that co-pilot +150 new features will be released on 9.26.23. So if it comes out in October does it really make a difference? The Beta Build that I just got out of is 23H2. I am not really in to all of this AI as it can become dangerous if used in the wrong hands. I also find it strange that there is no 23H1? but then this is Microsoft.

Why is strange that there is no 23H1? Microsoft announced probably over a year ago that the cadence is now one new major release a year. This was very public and very much discussed here and everywhere. This should be no surprise to anyone.

The point is that there are 2 major releases upcoming. One on Sep 26, and another in what we presume to be October. I'm just trying to understand why 2 releases and not a single 23H2 release.

Then why have a 23H2. Logic would dictate that there should have been a 23H1. Microsoft is Best at confusing their users. That being said I am now looking for a NUC to run Linux on.

There are a bunch of features that are missing from this update, though. We thought this would be Microsoft’s larger 23H2 update dropping on September 26th, but that’s coming a little later and will include some even bigger changes to Windows 11. A new volume mixer is on the way, alongside native RAR and 7-zip support, Dynamic Lighting for controlling RGB accessories, and even app labels and ungrouping for the Windows 11 taskbar.

Microsoft hasn’t confirmed when it will ship the changes in the 23H2 update, so you’ll need to wait a little longer for that update to drop.

Correction September 21st, 12:15PM ET: Microsoft confirmed in a blog post after its “special event” that its upcoming Windows 11 update will be an update to 22H2, instead of the 23H2 update we were expecting. We regret the error.

So far, for Insiders at least... it's just like a monthly update.
It will probably be like that for everyone that has compatible hardware.

On unsupported hardware... an In-Place Upgrade may be necessary.
Sometimes, for some unknowable reason... some folk's computers just won't take a feature update via Windows Update.
For those few... an In-Place Upgrade will be necessary.


Short answer: You will need to wait and see, just like the rest of us. ^^

1. Add a pinch of confusion, a dash of bad design, and a serving of broken GUI... and call it progress. :D
2. And for dessert... break any work-arounds that users may have found.

Probably because there was no major upgrade in the first half of the year ("H1"). Now that there is in this 2nd half of the year ("H2") it is called 23H2. I know you realize this but newbees might not know the naming convention.:p

The idea is to make those changes mandatory o the user. Cumulative updates can be forced, not the big 2xHx updates. It will force the adoption of those features through the community.
