I don't feel comfortable to upgrade or clean install Windows 11 on my unsupported computer. How about you? Please post it here

I'm now on a 4-month-old Notebook that came with Win10 Pro and after setup got Win11 Pro. I have a Desktop I'm considering doing a hardware clone of the drive then try the Upgrade using some of the tips on how to install on unsupported hardware 'just to see' what happens. Just like an Insider Preview computer it is not my main/production machine.

Well, as you say, "unsupported". The security risks will only grow day by day, week by week. Without any MS update support, you will have a nice doorstop in no time. 🥱

I have installed Windows 11 Pro on my old Windows 7 laptop. It works fine, and I am getting Microsoft updates. It will never turn into a door stop, I still have the Windows 10 Pro hard drive that I can install in a few minutes. In the mean time I am enjoying Windows 11 PRO on my laptop

Exactly what I have done for my System Two below. It's a test machine, waiting to see what (if anything) may go wrong. So far nothing bad has happened.

I would not rely on it for my main machine though, so for my System One I got a fully W11 compatible machine.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I m anow at a point where I run Windows 11 on no fewer than 7 unsupported systems including 2 systems that are a minimum of 10 years old.

I have absolutely zero problems on any of these systems.

However, the very fact that you are uncomfortable with this makes me question why you want to do so. If you are not comfortable with it, don't do it!

As an alternative, if you want a completely safe way to just test, I'd like to suggest this:

1) Create a disk image backup of your system as it is now using a quality backup program such as Macrium Reflect.

2) Perform you clean install of Windows 11.

3) Test.

4) If you have any difficulties, restore your backup.

Without any update support? Windows 11 updates currently work on all systems - supported and unsupported.

Could that change? Sure - but I STRONGLY doubt it and for some very sound reasons that I've already explained multiple times.

You've got approximately 3 to 4 years to evaluate / reevaluate.

Continue to use Windows 10 until October 2025 then decide whether to use Windows 10 in an unsupported fashion (End of Life).

By this time (October 2025) there should be sufficient information about Windows 12 to decide whether to stay with Windows 10, move to Windows 11, or even move to Windows 12.

If the PC you're referring to is your main system or daily driver, I don't recommend upgrading an unsupported system to Win 11. Who knows with the next major update if Microsoft closes the loopholes that now exist to run it on unsupported hardware.

For what it's worth i've been running Win11 Dev on my main unsuported since the Russian leak version, i also use the term "main" quite loose in my situation. My main is simply me running the high seas, casual gaming & watching tv and movies. If the worst should happen it's really no thing to clean install.

Now if you're doing actual real work like company payroll, design, or things that actually matter if you lose them, then maybe not.

Just bear in mind that if you are uncomfortable with going to windows 11, there are several newer versions of Windows 10 you can go to. I know you are currently on an LTSC version, but even within the Long Term Servicing Channel, you have new versions such as the 2021 release of Nov. 16th.

I feel comfortable to upgrade or clean install Windows 11 in the future if I buy my brand new supported computer in the future.

If it's a new computer, I would hope you wouldn't have to do an upgrade to Win 11.

Hi folks
I find the simplest way is to run Windows in smallish "VHDX" physical partitions -- easy to Multi-boot" and maintenance of all / any of them is a doddle.

This also even works if you run VM's as you can also "Multi-boot" the a VM (Single VM definition).

When doing it for VM's initially from Linux Host on KVM you need to establish the inital Virtual disk as a SATA rather than a Virtio drive as you wont have the Virtio Windows disk drivers at the time of the initial install. Boot the VM into command mode from a PE iso, Macrium iso or a windows installl iso in command mode. On the initial "Virtual disk" create a single 100 M efi fat32 partition and the rest as a single ntfs partition. Create vhdx files on the large partition and attach to the booted "PE" system. then do a dism apply-image and bcdboot for each Windows system you want to install.

The VM at boot will show : Here either W10 or W11 for this particular VM.

Simple, flexible and saves messing around with "Too many" VM's -- good for testing different builds / versions of W10/W11 where you want to run on the same / similar hardware - or even the same / similar "Virtual" hardware.

Doing it this way also you keep digital licenses of all the Windows systems. Of course the drawback is that you can't run them concurrently but that's probably not a big issue for individual testing.

Running Host as :

I'm quite happy to have Windows 11 (released version) on "unsupported" hardware. So far I have installed it successfully on 4 "unsupported" machines (Intel 3rd gen/4th gen/6th gen including OptiPlex 7010 9020 5050) & two of them are the sole machines of their current owners.

I have also quickly tried installing on one or two earlier machines without satisfactory results so these have remained Windows 10 machines.

If any of the "unsupported" machines start having problems they will simply have something else installed - until then they are Windows 11.

Even in the modern world we should not assume that "unsupported" means "will not work".
