Windows 11 Win+H Voice Typing erases the screen when you hit escape (and other actions)

Hi all,

I should start up by saying I'm already a dragon dictate user so I realized there are other solutions available but Win+H is "usually" faster for me.

I use voice dictation a lot and one of the annoyances I have with the windows 11 voice typing feature is that I will be dictating some text and then for example I will hit the escape key, or hit Win + H again to "turn it off", or click on another window or the desktop, etc.

When I do this, a lot of the times the text I had just dictated gets erased and I have to go back and do it over and over again or get so frustrated that I just end up typing it out which defeats the purpose. I've seen other people mention this on Google But have yet to find a cause or a solution.

The problem is that this behavior not consistent, there are times where I can hit escape to turn it off for example and that works just fine without deleting the text other times it immediately erases what I just typed dictated. (I recorded the image below three times because two of the three it did not delete the text Sigh :( )
Also I should mention this problem is not limited to just one computer.

Any advice? Thank you.

I wish I could help you with that, but I've never used voice typing. :confused: Hopefully one of the others who does will jump in.

I use voice typing a lot but have rarely used the escape key or Win + H to turn it off. Usually it turns off when I click into another window or the desktop, whatever. In any case I have never seen the kind of behavior you described, i.e. the dictation get erased. Sorry, no clue why this is happening to you.

HP replaced SSD under warranty in November, 2023.
No VPN.
I got to wondering about this problem. I have now observed this problem in some situations. It seems that if you click elsewhere In the middle of or quickly (a second or two) after speaking, the text will disappear. But it will stay if the escape key is clicked a few seconds later. Another example: in MS Word, the spoken text initially appears in a lighter font which darkens after a couple of seconds; if the escape key is hit while the text is lighter, it will disappear. In this text window, the text is initially underlined and if the key is struck while underlined it will disappear. But give it a couple of seconds, the underline disappears and the text remains even after striking escape.

So, it seems that the text disappears only if the escape key or click occurs during that initial appearance of the text. I had never noticed that before, as I almost always put a period after and pause before doing something else.

Not sure that makes sense, but if you try giving it a couple of seconds after speaking, the text should remain. Be interesting to see if that's how it works for you.

Unfortunately I have not found it long enough Wait time where it doesn't happen short of waiting for the speech recognition just to time out. Sometimes if I try repeatedly like five or six times it might work but by then I'm so aggravated that I end up just typing what I was saying and then a little while later I will try again and things work as expected without deleting the text so I'm completely at loss as to how it's supposed to behave correctly without doing that. Also it doesn't have to be the escape key that I use to terminate recognition, I can hit space bar, arrow key, or whatever and that will also terminate speech recognition, maybe I will get lucky and it won't delete and other times it will delete the line.


I just typed this entire reply with my voice and it worked flawlessly. Go figure.
