A friend wants to sell his Linux loaded laptop for almost nothing, which is hard to resist.

Is there a way to legally get Windows for free (temporarily) so I can install it on that machine?

There is no free version of Windows OS only Linux is free distro you will need to purchase the Windows product key and use Windows 11 media creation tool or Rufus to create yourself bootable installation media.

My advice, buy it, keep Linux on it , learn it, it will come in handy.

Yes, the media creation tool which will use a generic product key which provides a grace period until you're prompted for a paid licensing key.

If Windows was originally on it, the licence will be stored online. If you create or have a Microsoft account, it should activate Windows.

Actually there is no 'grace period'. An unactivated Windows 10/11 will run indefinitely, but with restriction on personalisation until it has been activated.

If when installing Windows it detects a key in the bios it will skip asking you for a key, and use the bios key to choose the edition (Home of Pro) to install. If this was a Windows 10 key it will also activate Windows. Laptops that were sold by the OEM with Linux preinstalled will not have a Windows key in the bios.

You could install Windows 10 on such a machine. To install Windows 11 without needing to employ a workaround it would need to meet the minimum hardware requirements for Windows 11. Basically that means a UEFI bios, Secure Boot capable, TPM 2.0, and an 8th gen Intel CPU or later (or the equivalent from AMD).

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

It's also possible to buy OEM Windows 11 licenses at much lower price than retail.

I don't know the explanation. As far as I know, the keys are legit, and will never be blacklisted.

Does the laptop meet the Windows 11 hardware requirements? If not, there are work-arounds. How to Bypass Windows 11's TPM, CPU and RAM Requirements

Thanks everyone. Lots of good ideas here. My friend says Windows 10 was originally on it. I do have a MS account, so I'll try installing 10 and see what happens. Hopefully it can upgrade to 11 after that. The laptop can support it.

In that case it should have an existing digital license stored on Microsoft's activation servers and linked to the hardware ID of the PC. As long as you install the same edition of W10 (Home or Pro) it will activate from the existing digital license as soon as it can contact the activation servers.

The digital licence is valid for both W10 and W11.

Just had a thought - perhaps a bad one, lol - as I've never tried something like this before:

If I make a disk image of my current 11, can I simply put it on the new laptop?

Maybe.

Windows is pretty good about switching to new drivers. Not guaranteed.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

This is wrong. You are never prompted for a paid licencing key. If you run unactivated, you cannot personalise pc.

However, this, whilst not actually illegal, does not comply with terms of EULA, and it is this forum's basic stance that all pcs should be activated.
