i just used this for the first time. i sent a text. i noticed i don't get notifications if the app is closed. this kinda sucks cause i don't want this thing always open. is there a way to have the process running without the app being open on my taskbar? is there another program for talking to another windows device that doesn't go through text or email? i thought there was suppose to me some kind of instant messenger.

Could well be part of Teams so disable teams in Task Manager >Startup if it doesn't work turn it on again

There is Skype. Our senior group used it when everything closed down due to the pandemic.

It's free, but each participant needs to have it on their computer.

Just go to Skype.com, download the version for Windows, and install. It's pretty easy to use.
