Dear all

When installing a fresh Windows 11.

1.
Is Windows Defender turned on by default / from the start?

2.
Is Windows Defender real-time protection turned on by default / from the start?

3.
What if McAfee antivirus is pre-installed on the laptop.
Does that change / impact 1 and 2?

4.
Where can I see the threats, malware etc. that Windows Defener has found?

Thank you

to expand on this, for number 3

if you have a new pc and the trial antivirus subscription runs out, windows defender will auto turn itself on, but you still need to uninstall mcafee/norton etc whatever came with the pc as its just starting up with your pc for no reason.

The laptop came with pre-installed Windows.
When I booted the laptop up for the first time, I had to create user, choose language etc.

1. and 2. Yes, however if McAfee antivirus is pre-installed then that is used.

3. McAfee integrates with Windows Defender, some elements of security are still parts of Windows overall security.

4. That is much further down the line, maybe years, depending on how you use your Laptop.

When McAfee is pre-installed then you get a month of use for free, or whatever, see details for a particular Laptop.
Assuming you uninstall after the free trial then Windows Defender clicks in.

McAfee does just uninstall these days, no worries, there is a McAfee MCPR tool available but I did not need to use that.
Windows Defender clicks in automatically, very easy.

Did you set it yourself, or did it do it auto / by itself?

Did Windows Defender and Windows Defender rea-time protection turn on by itself?

1.
What elements of security?

2.
I am most concerned with the firewall.
I asumme, that Mcafee has a good firewall aswell?

Meaning that after uninstall, Windows Defender turned on by itself?

My problem is, I can't remember the exact setup when I turned on my laptop and used Windows for the first time.

1.
Was McAfee pre-installed

2.
Was McAfee active from the start, McAfee firewall, antivirus protection etc. - or did it require some kind of manual activation of a trial-period

3.
If McAfee was pre-installed and activated from the start, was it then default selected as the Windows antivirus and firewall program

4.
If McAfee was not pre-installed or activated from the start - was Window Defender antivirus and firewall then on by default from the start

I know my system came with pre-isntalled McAfee Livesafe.

Has anyone else bought a new laptop with McAfee Livesafe, and can tell me:

First time you entered Windows / saw desktop.

1.
Was MS Defender selected as protection in Virus & threat protection?
Or was McAfee Livesafe selected as protection in Virus & threat protection?

2.
Was McAfee Livesafe already active?
Or did it require to start a trial-period for example, before McAfee Livesafe would be activated?

Thank you

On a new OEM computer if McAfee is pre-installed
1. McAfee Livesafe is active. Defender is turned off.
2. Trial starts automatically with no registration. After trial period you have to purchase it

Defender would not be active until Mcafee is uninstalled and the system restarted. You might have to go to Security Ceter and manually turn it on.. I suggest you use the McAfee Unintall tool to uninstall any Mcafee product.

If McAfee LiveSafe is part of the pre-installed software bundle, that the laptop came with.

McAfee LiveSafe would be active from the first time I login and see the Windows desktop?
It would for exmaple not require to press "activate" in a McAfee window?

How long is the trial? 30 days?

Thank you

The only thing I can add is that I run the McAfee removal tool the first thing after setup for all of my clients. No exception.
Sounds like you have experience / experienced this scenario several times.

How would you answer the above questions?

Thank you

It's hard to say. I run the McAfee removal the first time the computer gets to the desktop. I do not look around for anything you are asking for.

You could not pay me to use McAfee on any system. Sorry.

To me, there is no point to using another antivirus for anyone as defender is quite good on its own.

However, I do like Malwarebytes as a side second opinion scanner. But most people would be fine with defender.

I always set up systems for clients with the following:

1.) Make them an admin account and a regular limited account and have them use the regular account.

2.) Set UAC to always notify

3.) Have them use chrome or edge depending on the ecosystem they prefer with all the security settings set to max. Also add a few extensions.

4.) Enable Bitlocker if it's a laptop.

5.) If a laptop, Use a Microsoft account. This prevents password resets being done from boot and other tricks and further tampering by an unauthorized party.

6.) If they don't install many windows programs and use the same programs everyday, (rarely adding anything else) I set the following:

Settings > apps > advanced > choose where to get apps > From the Microsoft store only.

This pretty much removes a giant amount of the risks of threats on windows clients.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

But if they use a computer to just browse the web like most people and don't use/need any windows specific program? I give them a chromebook.
