Hi everyone... Windows Defender has been going haywire since this morning... when I run a full or normal scan, it starts and then stops...

Event ID 7031 from the Service Control Manager in Windows means a specific background service stopped or crashed unexpectedly. Windows then performs a recovery action, like restarting that service. The log lists the name of the failed service and how long it took to react.

To reset Microsoft Defender and the Windows Security app interface on Windows 10 or 11, use the built-in system settings to clear corrupted app data.

Reset via Windows Settings
    • Open the Start menu and open Settings.
    • Go to System and select System components (on Windows 10, go to Apps > Installed apps or search for Windows Security).
    • Find Windows Security in the list.
    • Click the three dots menu next to it and select Advanced options.
    • Scroll down, click Repair, and if that fails, click Reset.
    • Confirm the Reset prompt and restart your PC.

Reset via PowerShell (Alternative)

  • Right-click the Start button and select Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
  • Type or paste the registration command: Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.SecHealthUI -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"} and press Enter.
  • Restart your machine.

Hello,

I received the same error message this morning in the Event Viewer when Windows Defender automatically updated as my PC started up.

I had never encountered any problems before.

Microsoft must have released an update for Windows Defender that contains bugs.

I hope a patch will resolve this issue automatically.

That's right.

Leave it as is and don't do anything for now. As I said, Microsoft must have rolled out a buggy update for Windows Defender this morning, and it caused it to crash. I'd be curious to know if other people experienced the same thing this morning.

All we can do is wait for the next fix.

Noticed this too this morning. doing a quick scan and after a few secs it just stops the scan.

Good news ... today with definitions 1.457.238.0 both the quick and full scan work ... apparently the bug was caused by the definitions ... in short, with Microsoft you never get bored :cautious: ...

I can also confirm that the issue has been resolved in version 1.457.238.0.

This morning, when I booted up my PC, I didn't see any error messages in the Event Viewer.

This has also been confirmed on Reddit.

It just goes to show that sometimes you have to be patient and do your research before rushing to throw out commands left and right in an attempt to fix things.
