Clean install of Win 11 22H2 on new NVME drive.
Was going through the normal process of updating drivers from my motherboard manufacturer (much newer than the often ancient Windows drivers).
Tried using the installers (Gigabyte) which failed to do anything at all, even though they seemed to work fine - the driver in Device Manager stayed the same generic.
Next thing I tried was pointing Device Manager to the correct inf file (Have Disk/Choose a driver - even the older Microsoft one doesn't work), and that's when the problem message started.
I uninstalled the device (Realtek 2.5GBe Ethernet Controller - on motherboard), and now my device manager has an entry for an ethernet controller that will not accept any drivers without the same message (see pic), and I've ran the troubleshooters (useless) and am no without Ethernet, relying on spotty Wi-Fi.
