Windows explorer freezes while it loads each file individually

Heres a video of the problem: explorer_2022-11-25_12-12-18

Whenever I open a folder with a decent amount of files in it, each file "loads" individually down the list. The whole time, Explorer is frozen and I cant do anything until this load is done. After about 30 minutes of not being in the folder, reopening it means it will load like this all over again.

Windows 11 22H2, but it was also like this on Windows 10 for like 6+ months. All drives are SSDs with good drive health.

I see that almost all those files are .mp4 videos. I don't recognise the icon for those files, so I guess you have a third-party video player installed and set as the default for .mp4 files. Freezing like this is often due to explorer generating thumbnails for each of the files, and it will probably be using your associated program to do that. Try changing the default for .mp4 to Movies & TV and see if that makes any difference.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround. In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround. Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package.

Still happens when changing the default to Films & TV
