OS
Windows 11 Pro 24H2
I have a Dell XPS-8960 desktop and an MSI GS76 Stealth laptop, both running Windows 11 Pro latest update. The MSI is starting Windows just fine, but on the Dell, today when I went to log in, the only option on the logon screen was to enter my PIN. My fingerprint reader and camera did not appear. When I opened settings, it told me that neither option was available. I checked device manager, and it said both devices were working properly.

Can anyone help?

It is the latest update of Windows 11 pro. Both devices worked just fine for weeks. I uninstalled and reinstalled both devices and drivers to no avail, rebooting each time.

So you’re running 24H2?

Please type “Winver” into search on your PC and open it. Please type the version and build that it reports, into your “System Specs / OS” section (first on the list where you have placed “Windows 11”) Or just post it here in this thread.

Like this for example: Windows 11 Pro 24H2 Build: 26100.1742

This link will open your System Specs:

Thank you

This member here, who owns an XPS, updated their BIOS, said it helped but hasn’t been back to mention if it stuck.

They also said (before updating the BIOS):

If I go into the BIOS, disable it, apply changes, and immediately re-enable it (applying changes, but not exiting the BIOS); as soon as I boot into Windows, it works perfectly for a while (sometimes a couple hours, sometimes a couple weeks), and then it disappears again, for the same process to repeat.

Perhaps you could connect to Dell or use their software to check for an updated BIOS.

Sorry, you said Desktop, appologies.
I take it that it is an external Fingerprint Reader, being a desktop? What brand & model is the Fingerprint Reader?

I would first try another user account.

Here is device manager. Please keep in mind that both devices worked just fine for weeks. The only user account is my Microsoft Account. Everything works just fine on my MSI laptop, with virtually an identical setup except 16 cores and 16 GB memory.

By creating a new user account, you may be able to determine if there is an issue with your admin account.

I added both tutorials, you can delete the new one when finished with it, quite easily.

Can you recall anything you may have changed in Windows in the past couple of weeks, however small it may be?

Hi again.

I just noticed this post by Brink and wondered if because you’re using an external Bio reader, that your problem might be due to this;

I posted this question on about a dozen forums. The problem is definitely the 24H2 update. There are numerous problems with this being posted regarding both Dell and HP computers. I guess that's why my MSI is OK.

Right, that’s why I asked if you could post your version.

But you posted an image of 23H2

IMG_5047.png

Now you’ve changed it to 24H2.
If I had of known you had 3H2, I’d of concluded it was due to that.

Would of been good information to have (y)

My mistake. I have 23H2 as shown in the screenshot. I don't have 24H2. I updated to the version I now have on 9/30/24. I didn't even notice the discrepancy. So, I guess I am back to square one.

The steps in his tutorial must be for Windows 10, because the settings app in Windows 11 does not have the same options shown in his tutorial.

Perhaps it’s for Copilot + PCs but it doesn’t say so in the tutorial heading.

The way I see it is you have 2 choices (unless someone else has a suggestion)

1. Try what I suggested (because you asked for hep) Create a new (2nd) user account to see if the issue remains when in a new user account. And if so, cross that bridge with help from members.

2. Wait for patch Tuesday (Tomorrow) and see if the issue remains

I created second local account. It has the same problem. I also ran the reg file in Brink's tutorial, which didn't help.

Good job.

Well, it would be good if patch Tuesday fixes it.

Other options:

Is the device connected via USB? Try another USB port.

Try an In-Place upgrade.
If your device is Windows 11 supported, try Option One.

You should do a system backup first. Always do system backups (create a system image)

I have often done in-place upgrades. I did try changing the USB port, which didn't help.

I’m suggesting all this stuff because I have no idea you have already tried it. All you said is my bio device doesn’t work and that you tried removing and replacing drivers. You aren’t making this easy.
It’s good to let members know when creating a thread, what has been attempted.

Since this seems to have occurred since a cumulative update, lets hope tomorrow fixes this. 🙏

Anyway, its 3.30 in the morning and I have a logo to finish. Cheers 🤞
