I too would like running VMware player on Pro.
Like you recommended to create a full back up of Home, just in case.
Would run Pro for a few days, if all looks good fine, else would do a clean install...

I'm not knowledgeable when it comes to computers, software etc. med.doc by profession, else just a noob.

Correct it's ON by default, but a member recommended turning it OFF/ unchecking...🙁

@Fabler2 , IF VMWare player can work on Home, would you still recommend updating to Pro?

Finances are not an issue, I being a noob don't wanna make W11 more complex. Hope it has benefits over Home.

I had it working a while ago in home but don't know what your issue was. Just booted to Win 10 Pro on this laptop (dual boot) and started installing Windows 7 on it again so you can see.

Most likely the reason could be not installing WHP during install, since I unchecked it.

Just a bit confused over updating to Pro, now after reading your expert comments and links posted. Don't want unnecessary headaches 😉

Q1 - no. Home has the features but you cannot access them. By upgrading to Pro, you are just unlocking pro features.

Q2 - no need to clean install to upgrade. I never do - the clean install brigade will tediously tell you it is better which is not true really. Better is a subjective point of view. It would take me days to reinstall my apps and optimise back to current settings.

I have never clean installed on my main OS since Windows 8 days. Clean installing is a last resort when all else fails in my opinion.

Q3 - It depends what you are doing. Hyper-V is better for running Windows OSs (great for Insider versions), but not so good for other OSs particularly if you need sound. You can get sound with some Linux installations, but it is not that simple though. So VMWare is better for Linux for example.

As I said earlier Hyper-V and VMware do not coexist very well, but you can set up boot entries to boot in Hyper-V mode (type 1 hypervisor on) or VMWare mode (type 1 hypervisor off). In the end, some will advise one way, some will advise the other. I find that once you have used Hyper-V a lot, you would not revert to VMWare except when needed.

Like everything, you have to experiment, and decide what suits you.

Type this in command prompt?:


C:\>bcdedit /copy {current} /d "No Hyper-V"
The entry was successfully copied to {ff-23-113-824e-5c5144ea}.
