My mum has an old laptop with Windows 7 upgraded to Windows 10. It's had Windows Live Essentials installed since day one. She discovered a load of old emails she needs to keep. Her new laptop has Windows 10 but obviously no Windows Essentials software now. The emails go back quite a way and aren't on the server any more

Is it possible to get a working, safe download of Windows Live essentials that I can install on Windows 10?
Emphasis on the working and safe parts!

I don't need to send/receive mail, I just need to access the storage folders on the disk

Afaik the storage folders are local only unless the folders were added under the specific email account. If they’re under ‘Other’ then these are locally stored so wouldn’t be on the server. I remember losing the emails mine contained after a clean install of Windows. Luckily I had a backup of the Live Mail folder so could restore it.
Live Mail works fine on Win 11.

Yes the storage folders are local only, if I can get Live Mail to run on Windows 10 I can copy the storage folder over and access the emails. That's the plan

Yes. My recommendation is to run Live Mail in order to create the folder, then close live mail, open %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\ & delete the Live Mail folder then paste the old live mail folder tithe same place then open live mail.
This is what I do/did.

I've done that before myself, I just need a proper copy of WLM software to install with!

Live Mail 2012 is alive and well in Windows 11 but will not work for receiving email from gmail any more which is why I no longer use it as my main email app . I do use it for 2 pop3 accounts from my isp.

However you do not need to have Live Mail installed to open old emails stored in Live Mail..
Browse to C:\Users\glass\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
Copy this folder to external media.
If the old emails reside in the email account, open the email folder (it's usually the one that has your email provider name)
If the files were saved in storage folders they will be in C:\Users\glass\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Storage Folder
You can access the mail inside any folder in one of 2 ways. Either right click and select "open With" Or on the new computer go to default app by file type. Find .eml in the list and select an email app already installed on your system to open that file type.

In some modern mailprograms linke Thunderbird and EM-Client you can open the complete storage folder to import all mails at once. The only thing that does not function is that the folder names will be abbreviated to something like "Fam59145" instead of "Familymails urgent". Just an example, it has been 2 years ago that I switched from Live Mail to EM-client after having been using Thunderbird on one of the systems.
