Windows Mail, Calendar and People app in Windows 11 will be replaced by Outlook in 2024

The new Outlook for Windows brings the latest features with a modern, simplified design to your Windows PC. You can tailor it to your style and do more with the new Outlook for Windows. Learn more about the new Outlook for Windows here.

Beginning in 2024, Windows 11 devices will be shipped with the new Outlook for Windows as the default mailbox application free for all to use. Starting in June 2023, we are beginning the process of migrating existing Windows Mail, Calendar, and People users to the new Outlook for Windows.

What to expect​

If you have an account that is supported by the new Outlook for Windows, you will see a toggle in Windows Mail and Calendar to Try the new Outlook in the upper right corner of your screen. Clicking on the toggle will start the download of the new Outlook for Windows on your device. This may take several minutes to complete. After the installation completes, Windows Mail or Calendar will close and the new Outlook for Windows will open, where you can sign in and choose to import your accounts and settings.

If you would like to go back to Windows Mail and Calendar, you can do so by clicking on the toggle in the new Outlook for Windows. You’ll be asked to provide feedback on why you are going back – we encourage you to let us know what we can improve about the new Outlook for Windows so that our product team has the chance to address feedback before support for Windows Mail and Calendar ends in 2024.

To streamline your experience, over the coming months we will begin to automatically download and install the new Outlook for Windows onto your device when you launch Windows Mail and Calendar. You’ll be notified about this the launch before the download/install happens. We will also begin in 2023 to launch users directly into the new Outlook for Windows, with the option to toggle back to Windows Mail and Calendar. Again, you will be notified about this the launch before it happens.

If you are not interested in trying the new Outlook for Windows, you can stop using Windows Mail and Calendar and instead manage your email and calendar through your service’s webmail application, or a different email client. Support for Windows Mail, Calendar, and People is ending in 2024 so if you don’t want to use the new Outlook for Windows after trying it, you will need to move to a different application by the end of 2024. More information on specific end of support dates will be made available in accordance with the Modern Policy for product lifecycles.

What if one of my accounts is not yet supported?​

The new Outlook for Windows supports Microsoft 365 consumer accounts (e.g. Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, Live.com, etc.), Microsoft 365 work or school accounts, and Gmail. In the coming months we will release support for Yahoo!, iCloud and additional email providers through IMAP and POP.

If you have an account connected to Windows Mail and Calendar that is not yet supported by the new Outlook for Windows, you will not be prompted to try the new experience. Once the new Outlook for Windows supports your account, you will begin to see the same prompts and messaging described above.

I tried this new look outlook. Once again, there are too many settings relevant to single account's and no option in many settings to “apply to all`’
It looks great, works well but when you have 20 email accounts, setting it up is still a pain in the butt.
For instance, I don’t like the ”focussed” setting, to disable it I have to do it for every single account as there is no apply to all accounts option. There are other settings with the same issue.

Hopefully any problems like this will be ironed out before general release next year. I can't even test it right now as I have email addresses that the new app doesn't support.

Another thing MS need to work on - the current Mail app runs in the background so we get notifications, the new one has to actually be running for the notifications to work. A step backwards!

I didn't realize that. That isn't very productive at all. Hopefully they'll fix that.

I see it in both Win 10/11. I have many POP/IMAP accounts unrelated to outlook .com. Seems fine.

Nope, not in my opinion. If you’re not concerned with Windows mail, no. You don’t have half as much control as you do in Outlook in Office 2019 and unless you want to pay a monthly fee, your cloud allotment is limited, however the monthly fee is minimal.

It will be interesting to see though, if Microsoft plans on removing Outlook from future office suites. I personally like Outlook in the Office set, I like the control, I like using pst files, I like not being restricted unless I pay monthly fee’s.

My sentiments are the same as yours. Taking Outlook out of Office seems anti-consumer, but that doesn't mean MS wouldn't do it.

Works "Ok-ish" but as I have Office 2021 I prefer the standard Outlook.
For a free client I suppose it's not too horrible - but IMO Thunderbird is better - but that's users individual choice.
Thunderbird allows all sorts of manipulations with inboxes but you still need to add accounts individually if you have several different email servers.

I'm using the latest Thunderbird (beta) on Linux and its fine by me - although beware if your server uses non std latin characters it wont necessarily work as you won't get passed the "invalid server name" stage !!!!. Fortunately my own email server on my own domain can set an alias so I can use latin-iso chars. Emails sent to the alias get received 100% OK.

Computer 1: I'm using Outlook 365 on my general purpose (Win10 Pro)_computer. I like it though what I've had to do with it primarily because of my horrible experiences with OneDrive has made it terribly bloated. I need to severely clean it up.

Computer 2. I've used Mail on my second Win10 DAW-dedicated computer. It receives a dedicated DAW-specific email account.

Cell Phone: I use yet another email account on my cell phone. This is because I want my cell phone to act as a telephone, not an entry point for all my email from everywhere. I use whatever 'email format' (imap?) a cell phone requires to get email. So if someone wants to email me on the phone they'll have to use email address--or just text me. (I just got a cell phone. We have no towers in the area and so 98% of cellphone work is done via WiFi. I have no idea how tower communication will change things.)

Computer 3 (laptop): I'm using my wife's (Win11 )computer to get acquainted with Win11 and to make it as Win10-like as possible for her. I have no idea if the email I get here is POP or IMAP!!!

- All of this makes it absolutely necessary that all my email accounts are POP accounts. My understanding is that IMAP accounts, unlike POP accounts, when they are accessed automatically remove the original from the server.

- Also, because I use different browsers for different work (or play) functionality I avoid syncing anything.

Based on what I'd heard, I thought Microsoft was going to force users to use "Outlook-classic" which made me wonder if this was a play to get everyone to buy Microsoft Office Suite.
Based on what I read above, I've just switched to the preview version of Mail--which looks/feels nothing like Outlook and which Microsoft, to add to the confusion, calls Outlook. Now I'm wondering what 1691476679710.png portents. And, of course, I'm dreading this new incarnation of 1691476750265.png OneDrive. I know that Microsoft is pushing things in the direction of everything on the cloud--no privacy or user control of his/her information--and I'm worried.
