Android Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) is being deprecated beginning March 5, 2025

 Microsoft Learn:

Microsoft is ending support for the Windows Subsystem for Android™️ (WSA). As a result, the Amazon Appstore on Windows and all applications and games dependent on WSA will no longer be supported beginning March 5, 2025. Until then, technical support will remain available to customers.

Customers that have installed the Amazon Appstore or Android apps prior to March 5, 2024, will continue to have access to those apps through the deprecation date of March 5, 2025. Please reach out to our support team for further questions at support.microsoft.com. We are grateful for the support of our developer community and remain committed to listening to feedback as we evolve experiences.

Because Microsoft is ending support for the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA), Amazon Appstore on Windows 11 will no longer be supported after March 5, 2025. Amazon and Microsoft are partnering to create a smooth end of support experience for developers and customers of Amazon Appstore on Windows 11. Developers will no longer be able to submit net new apps targeting Windows 11 after March 5, 2024, but developers with an existing app can continue to submit app updates until Amazon Appstore on Windows 11 is fully discontinued.

Starting on March 6, 2024, Windows 11 customers will not be able to search for Amazon Appstore or associated apps from the Microsoft Store. Customers may continue using Amazon Appstore apps that they previously installed and will still be able to receive app updates.

I'm an Android phone user, but the Microsoft Subsystem for Android was a major disappointment and I never used it.

They should have made a deal with Google...and WSA would fly already. Now Google pushed their own version which as I understand is quite decent.

Typical MS...create something nice and then they discontinue it. Not that I blame them, WSA has absolutely NO business value and offers nothing beyond what any emulator does today already.

I used it enough to hack in Google Play and their services and confirmed it is working, then they pushed an update and all my personalized stuff was gone and I had to do all my customizations again...so did not bother and never touched the thing ever again. 😂

I use it to access my blink cameras from my desktop that has a much larger screen then my Echo and mobile phone.

Yeah - we never had access to the full Amazon appstore and it only catered for (poor) childrens games.

Of course, it really failed because google and MS could not collaborate using google play.

The writing has been on the wall for years.

I am really disappointed about this. WSA was the main reason for me preferring Windows 11 over 10. I have tried Bluestacks in the past but it sucks and prevented the sleep feature on my laptop working properly and seemed to have completely broke the hibernate feature. I got sleep working again by disabling wake timers but not hibernate.

I find using Android apps on my PC really convenient and saves my from having to get my phone out of my pocket when wanting to control a smart device such as a light or smart plug. It's also often much faster than my phone.

Makes me glad I never used it - and now that I have hardware that could actually support it (refurbished Dell minitower i7) it won't get it; instead, I will take my one game that I would have taken to WSA had it hung on - The Grand Mafia - which is a Unity based game - on both Android and PC - Unity made WSA moot. I run it my laptop now - so I can take the same account to the Deadly (refurbished) Dell when it get its nVidia GTX 1050Ti Thursday.

As I've stated at RIP to the Windows Subsystem for Android, which goes away in 2025, this decision seriously disappoints me. The WSA was one of the features which frequently made me reconsider my choice of openSUSE as my primary OS. However, now that I have Waydroid and Windows soon shall have nothing comparative (except perhaps VirtualBox+BlissOS) I just feel bad for the many people who began to use the WSA in their workflows.
