Solved Windows Update Crashed Me, Macrium Failed Me Could Use Advise

I had the recent update come back up with explorer exe class not registered and the display was blinking. Nothing responded except for a long power button press to shut down. I googled the fault on another pc but none of the fixes could be performed because of the non response.

I am not a seasoned Macrium user but have used it for years and been saved by it a few times. I full image monthly and incremental every night. I did a recovery and came back with no bootable device. I tried the drive in another slot, no dice. It did not even see it. I have another drive arriving tomorrow to see if the slots are dead or the drive. Heck the drive may have happened to fail at the same time?

My question is if the new drive is recognized, and I can boot into macrium, even with no initialization or partitioning, or formatting, should a image restore work? Should I do a to new hardware.

What is the best method? I assume to restore the full image and then the latest incremental?

Yes, the image should restore to the new drive (with no initialization/partitioning needed). If the drive is a different size than the original, you 'may' be able to adjust that before/during the restore, but most likely will have to adjust the partition after the restore is complete.

As far as 'best method' I'm unsure, if it were me, I'd restore directly to the latest incremental and not worry about doing 2 restores.

--Edit--
If you decide to restore to the latest FULL and then latest Incremental (doing 2 restores) do NOT adjust the partition sizes until AFTER the second restore. Make sure everything is up and running before messing with it, otherwise restoring the Incremental may fail as it will no longer match the Full counterpart.

To be able to restore to a drive it has to be recognised by the bios. It doesn't have to be initialised or formatted, Macrium will take care of that when it restores an image. But it does have to be visible to the system.

If you complete a restore but still cannot boot, then boot from a Macrium Reflect rescue USB. Pick 'Fix Windows boot problems' from the Restore menu.

When you browse to choose the image to restore you can pick any incremental you like. Reflect will then restore the Full and all Incrementals up to and including the one you chose. This way you can choose to restore your system back to any point in time for which you have an Incremental.

The same holds true if you had made differentials, but in that case Reflect only needs the Full and the one Differential to complete the restore.

FIY I didn't mention I did try a fix windows boot. If it doesn't see the new drive I have a feeling the MB is bad. I ponder if chipset drivers could have been corrupted?

Situations like this are why I do not ever do incrementals on my system drive. Full images only, especially before installing a new drive.. Restore is straightforward.That way I can safely resize my partitions during the restore and not have to do a bunch of finagling with manual partitioning afterwards. The recovery partition is always in the way of directly extending the C: partition into the unused space. The space will not be contiguous. Macrium can circumvent getting into that situation.
I might consider incrementals on my data drive as there is nothing I can't live without, but I am a firm believer in KISS. Just my opinion because it's always worked for me.

When i started using WD NVME 250 Gb, my frequently used backup softwares like active boot, macrium and one other app didn't work while restoring windows image. Then I moved to Acronis. Always best.

Usually I re-install windows on formatted drive every 6 months or whenever system mess up. So I am not using image restore now. Images easily become old when we update drivers and apps frequently. So I didn't see much use with imaging.

@gapi, I looked at your system specs and then re-read your post again and see the wording leaves room for ambiguity on my part. Answer me one question. When you boot from the Macrium rescue media,does Macrium recognize the presence of the drive you are trying to restore TO?

Yes Thanks, But its not going well. My Bios will not see it and make it a boot drive but macrium USB will display it. And it keeps showing up an X: drive.
Working in fix windows boot problems I need to provide the path to it where windows is.
I'm worn out right now. I'll better explain tomorrow but I can see the drive.
I have a feeling I will be brushing up on dos commands. Probably a BIOS battery pull and reload defaults.
Somehow I named it EVO, and swear if I mount another drive it will call it EVO.

My BIOS will only see the macrium USB to boot. It will see other items, anything but the one I need.

Macrium sees the restored main drive. I need to make it bootable. I can enter dos if needed but need the paths to type.

There's a lot going on here that can prevent a successful restore with a successful boot.
The X: drive is the drive letter usually given to the WinPE OS which is a type of limited “live” version of Windows that is also used for the recovery environment. From the perspective of the recovery environment, X: is the main drive but it is not related to your actual OS and data in any way.

Plain and simple, before you can even think about Macrium recovery, the disk has got to be recognized in UEFI bios. That is your first priority. I am assuming your OS drive is still the Sabrent, I don't know anything about that brand but I do know some Samsungs are not detected in UEFI until the UEFI firmware is updated to the latest version. Check to see if you have a UEFI bios update.
Here is a couple of other articles that might be of help.





A successful image recovery will show multiple partitions. I do not see that in screenshot 2 so I do not think your recovery was successful as the X: drive assignment is used only by WinPE..

If your image is on an external drive, you can plug the drive into another computer that has Macrium installed. Right click on the image, select explore image. It should resemble my screenshot below. Your partition scheme will be probably be different. There's no way for me to know if your image is valid.

There's more I can throw at you that may come into play but deal with one thing at a time...get disk recognized in UEFI first. While you are in UEFI, make note of the following because we may need this information later.: Is Intel Rapid Storage Controller (IRST) enabled in your UEFI bios? Is VMD enabled in bios?

Also make yourself familiar with @Kari's Macrium tutorial. It was written for Macrium 7, but the procedure for Macrium 8 is not too dissimilar.

Success!! I'm typing on it now!

Something very crazy happened to this thing. A windows update took me out as described and my drives got renamed to the same thing with letters being reversed. C: being the 1TB storage and D: the 500GB OS. And both drives had the same content and Labels. Kind of a section of the storage drive I use was written to both. So no wonder drilling to C:\ or D:\Windows in the fix boot option was futile.
I looked at everything you guys pointed me at but no dice. My issue was not standard I guess.

I tried renaming & labeling in the recovery USB boot cmd window and it went OK but reverted on restarts. You guys seen the mess.
I'm a geezer who's intro to computing was DOS and I build my own desktops but not much any more and it takes repetition, not too much like riding a bike. But I kept on it this AM.
I even tried booting her up with no drives to see it the BIOS was being truthful and it was. Drives or no drives nothing to boot from. Even though I tried restoring and it seemed to write to them or one of but the data was not all there.
The macrium recovery boot cmd thing would not let me format either.

BIOS was OK, I replaced this mother board a month or two ago, and the BIOS needed no changes, instructions were to connect the battery, boot to it, choose load optimums and go. I did earlier in my process disconnect the battery, boot and repeat but nothing changed.

So finally after another failed restore attempt the last one I was gong to try before slinging it = choose the recovery source, destination - but this time the erase disk on each. Its awkward and not easy to get used to choosing to restore my OS to a drive labeled D: and my Storage to one labeled C:\ and pondered if the Erase Disk was thorough enough.

Here it is now. How do I find the stones to update again!
