Hi I have a computer with a very weird issue. It is running Windows 11 Pro 25H2. It will not check for updates automatically. If I go to Settings -> Windows Update then click Check for updates it behaves perfectly. I have tried the following things as suggested by Google AI:
I also verified updates are not paused, no group policy for WU is modified in gpedit.msc, tried a DISM with sfc /scannow which found no corruption,
and I also tried running Windows Update from the command line to see if I could trigger it that way using a scheduled task but no luck with usoclient StartScan or wuauclt /detectnow (at least they didn't post a time of check to the settings page).
Any ideas what might be causing this malfunction or procedures I could use to fix it?
Thanks!
Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter: Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and click Run.
Restart/Enable Windows Update Services:
Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
Locate Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), and Cryptographic Services.
Right-click each, select Properties, set Startup type to Automatic, and click Start if they are not running.
BITS actually is supposed to be manual which it is
Verify Date and Time Settings: Incorrect time settings can block updates. Go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time and toggle on Set time automatically.
Disable Metered Connection: If your network is set to "metered," updates may not download. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi/Ethernet, click on your network, and ensure Metered connection is turned Off.
Restart Your PC: Perform a full restart (not shutdown) to clear stuck services.
Check Disk Space: Ensure you have enough storage space on your system drive (usually C:).
