Windows Updates/WuMgr 1.1, was checking registry for any changes and accidentally "created NEW Key" when my mouse fell off the table...

Win 11 Pro v.23H2

New member here with a new Win 11 laptop. This forum went a looong way to reassuring me before I bought with Win 11 preinstalled, and I learned a lot from lurking here for a couple of weeks, but now I have an unforeseeable problem (and I hope it is not a huge one).

I have a mild/moderate brain injury that is worse under stress (and the stress has been a lot lately) so, apologies in advance for lack of clarity and/or grammar/spelling errors.

I have taken setting this new laptop up very slowly, and today I turned to the subject of Windows Updates. Although I used WuMgr very comfortably for years in Win 10 Pro, Win 11, in general, has been a challenge to acclimate myself to. Have had this laptop for just about a week, (lost former laptop and phone at same time due to a bad adapter in mid-July).

Downloaded WuMgr 1.1 and set it up, but have always been unclear as to which radio boxes in Options/Auto Updates to tick. Some come pre-ticked with a dash...It ran fine at first; was able to install a Defender Update and a Cumulative Update for 23H2 KB5042099 and rebooted successfully. Then re-opened WuMgr to look at some driver updates that had come up and they weren't there anymore. Tried to Search for Updates again and got: "Checking for updates failed: internal error, 0x80072EE6: Unknown Error 2147954406". Since then that's all that has popped up, no matter what I checked or unchecked in the Options/Auto Updates boxes.

Searching GitHub/WuMgr for this brought me to discussions about others with this Error and how to uninstall WuMgr (It opens with pre-ticked boxes and I thought it would be easier to go back to that, but it seems that even getting back to that is not clear). Then found discussion about the changes WuMgr makes to the registry in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate and went to see if mine was changed and if that was causing the Error. At that time my cat jumped into my lap and I dropped the mouse I was using, gak! Though, before there had only been one Windows Update folder with two entries: "ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate"=0, (and another one that is now not there), when I dropped the mouse a Pop up said "Create a New Key"? I didn't want that so I deleted it, but now there is another subfolder to Windows Update named AU that has "NoAutoUpdate"=1 and that is not what I remember being in the folder before the mouse drop/"Create New Key" snafu...

If you've kept up this far, thank you and bless you. I have not touched ANYTHING since this happened. I am petrified that I've done something irreversible. It has been a challenging learning curve to set up Win 11.

What should I do? What can I do? There is no Undo button for the Registry. Can I leave it as it is with the subfolder AU (what does that even mean* Edit: Yes, that stands for AutoUpdate, got it) and close the registry? Will it be okay? Is the "NoAutoUpdate"=1 causing the Error with WuMgr?

I am not going to close anything until I hear from someone, and I hope I do. Thank you so much in advance.

That doesn't even address the fact that for whatever reason WuMgr is now having this "Checking for updates failed: internal error, 0x80072EE6: Unknown Error 2147954406" . In all my years of using it before I had never had any problem at all and it was so useful for me.

(Just for my own memory prompt in case I need it, here are the two GitHub discussions I looked at, first the one re: the Error - Internal Error Downloading Updates · Issue #85 · DavidXanatos/wumgr
Then the one re: the registry changes - Uninstall WUMGR · Issue #109 · DavidXanatos/wumgr )

Hi, welcome to the forum 🙏

but now there is another subfolder to Windows Update named AU that has "NoAutoUpdate"=1 and that is not what I remember being in the folder before the mouse drop/"Create New Key" snafu...

Dropping a mouse isn't going to create that entry.

Will it be okay? Is the "NoAutoUpdate"=1 causing the Error with WuMgr?
I am assuming that disables Windows Updates via WuMgr from automatically updating. I don't use that app but I assume the setting is available within the app.

"1" would be YES
"0" would be NO

Changing the value to "0" I would assume allows Windows (or the app?) to update. But I don't think this is effective? I don't know. The app is so old.

I honestly don't believe you have done anything. Having said that, system backups are most important and stressed in here. Making a system backup before making changes to things like the registry is important.

Re the error: did you try reinstalling the app?

Before you do: download Revo Uninstaller Free and remove the app via this program. Set it to "Scan for leftovers" and let it blindly remove folders and registry entries without your intervention, just agree to prompts and let it do its thing.

Then reinstall WuMgr

That's all I have.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I have never and will never disable windows updates. But if I were to do so I would rely on the method in this forum's tutorial section and never a 3rd party tool. Disable Automatic Windows Updates in Windows 11 Tutorial

The best I can tell, WUMgr is a standalone app so there's nothing to uninstall. You could try to reset windows update components. If that doesn't work (I don't think it will), do a repair install.

I forgot to mention, WuMgr, as far as I know, has not been updated since 2019. It was made with Windows 10 in mind.

If you think you've accidentally created a reg key by mistake, run this command to export the current policies:
Code:
reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate /s > WU.reg

Attach the exported reg file, and maybe someone can review if you have a bogus key sitting around.

Thank you so much, antspants, for responding (the friend of mine who used to help me with my computing quandaries moved to Australia, so it is nice to receive help from there today :} ). If dropping the mouse didn't bring up "New Key", then I don't know what did. I don't know where that came from. As a rule, I don't do anything in the registry unless I am following explicit instructions and today I was just looking at it to see what the entries were there. I did set a restore point before installing the Cumulative Update, but I had no idea I would be fumbling my mouse just after that and having some new entry pop up.

Re: Reinstalling the app. Apparently, it doesn't "install", only "extracts" and runs when you click it, but I have read other of your posts, and seen you refer to Revo Uninstaller, and that sounds like a very helpful program for me to have. So I will do that, and thanks for the link.

As for backups, my laptop is so new that I'm not even finished setting up yet. Do you recommend any particular Back Up program that is intuitive to truly utilize? and very user friendly?
What has happened for me in the past (Seagate, Acronis, Windows Backup & Restore) is that I have the drives with the Backups, but then don't know how to correctly open and use the files created.

-and thank you again. I feel better now.

Is that what it’s called?. Yeah delete it. I missed that comment, sorry. If it was a valid key it would be named.

The app (Revo) as I discovered when downloading the manager, and as glasskuter mentions, will do noting as the manager runs without install.
Whatever settings you changed will still be present, unless you undo the changes in the app. No offence but the app looks usless, it’s very old and there are probably better processes.

What is it you want to disable?

I would consider glasskuters suggestion of a repair/upgrade or simply a total reset. Forget that manager all together, start again.
Check the tutorials glasskuter posted above.

For backups I now use a free program called Hasleo Backup
Simple interface. I’ve tested it at least 15 times now.

Yep, copy/paste that from an Administrator CMD window.

I did it, but nothing is coming up, just comes back to the System32> prompt.
I don't know how to send you an image of that*, Okay, discovered Snipping Tool, lol. See below:

Sincere apologies, I confess that I am getting confused and I don't seem to be able to get to the file that I found. What I post just seems to go to my Downloads folder?

Here is a screenshot of what I found when I looked for the file you specified:

Is that what you need? I'm sorry, but I'm lost. Haven't closed my registry and I really appreciate all trying to help. This caught me so by surprise and I have a very sick little dog that I have to tend to for a bit. I will check back later. Thank you for trying to help me.

1. Click the "Attach files" button from below.

2. When the Folder browser appears, navigate to \Windows\System32
3. Select "WU.reg" as the file. I can't tell if your actual file is really that short or not.

Just for Kicks, you can run a restore point. It does not reset the registry, but it will remove any entries that were made to the registry after the date of the restore point. KeithB

It is so strange, when I use this Attach Files link it just shows folders, and the entries are so different from when I search for WU.reg in the System32 folder and get the same preview that I screenshot for you earlier (the file size says 244mb?). I will try again in the morning. I'm so tired right now that I might be making a really thoughtless mistake. Thank you again, and Goodnight. I'll get some sleep and try again in the morning.

I agree with the previous post, that WuMgr was last updated in 2019 & was for Windows 10.
'If it's not broken, dont fix it' is what I've come to believe with PC's & software. Windows 11 update is there for a reason, & getting 3rd party programs to control that is looking for trouble.

Maybe stay away from programs that are not compatible with Windows 11. Get to know the operating system before adding to it.
