I want to thank everyone who responded to my ask if I have not already individually, or via the "points" buttons. I'm afraid that my dog is very ill and that has taken precedence over any challenges electronics are posing. The phone is hopeless, but at least I do have a working laptop now...I followed most all suggestions posted, and did not shut down Windows since this original post--just sort of checked it: used the calendar, opened an app or two, installed a font--small things. All has gone smoothly so I returned to setting Restore pts and will decide on Back up procedure (after the vet visits next week). WuMgr began to work as I remembered it to.
It appears that whatever changed in the registry with the fall of the mouse may have righted itself. I input nothing when that happened, but only reflexively deleted the pop-up that said "New Key", that is when panic at what had transpired sent me here for help. After using constructive suggestions, watching, and waiting, I've have been able this morning to install a few updates (after checking the web first to see if there were any issues). I received a few criticisms here about using WuMgr, but I am alone and trying to function with a brain injury (and the inability to walk without crutches) under extremely difficult circumstances that few could relate to; I am staying with what I know; with what has worked before. I tried to find a laptop with Win 10 Pro installed, but they wanted $700 more for it than the same model/specs on the one I purchased that had Win 11 (and the seller upgraded it to Pro without charge hoping it might make a few things easier)... Even as I type now it is so hard even to think.
I am very grateful to have known of a site that I could turn to when I was absolutely terrified. Losing my phone & laptop at once during the hottest heatwave we have ever had in an old house with no hvac and a sick dear dog has made me feel very small, despite a life history of overcoming challenges that most never have to face. I hope that in the future I will be able to contribute to this site as opposed to asking help from it, but I am so grateful that it-and all responders-were here. Again, gratitude to all who took the time and thoughtfulness to respond.
