windows usb security - didnt enable it and want it gone

hi, when using chrome, my credit card details are saved in chromes manager. when i try and fill the details on webpages chrome + windows spits out an error to insert my USB security. apparently, it is some kind of special USB flash drive that I don't have and would know if I did. I never set it up but find my movements around windows 11 hampered because it's missing. I tried setting up security on my iPhone through chrome but it didn't remove the windows security. I'm 100% certain I've never enabled this and don't have any idea how to disable it.

The best thing I can suggest is to use the credit card details app, in this case Chrome's manager, to reset your device preferences. There should be an option for something like "I have lost my USB key", this would I supose initiate a check of your identity through your mobile phone and/ or supplied e-mail address.
If you cannot find the option then maybe you have a Google account where the details are kept and the link to reset is to be found or it might be something your credit card company can help with.

I understand it can be very frustrating when these issues happen but also it is very rare for someone to have 2FA set up, especially with a hardware key without any input from them.
Other than the methods above this forum will not help you circumvent security protocols as we have no way of knowing if you are the proper owner of the device.

It's not something you could have easily set up by accident, according to Google's instructions here. Google also provide instructions for removing keys and dealing with lost keys.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

ok so someone suggested that i try Microsoft edge to see if that had the same issue, it did not. after i entered the cvc number the credit card data filled as expected, its only happening in google chrome. i checked that link, 2 step is on, google authenticator is set up, iPhone 14 voice n text verified. backup codes n security key are not set up.
