With problems in intel's 13 and 14th gen, is it wise to get them now?


This is something of a good news article for Gen14 I7 and I9 owners.

Puget says its Intel CPU failure rate is lower than AMD Ryzen failures — system builder releases failure rate data, cites conservative power settings

Puget claims AMD Ryzen 5000 and 7000 chips have a higher failure rate than Intel 13th- and 14th-gen processors, so far.

Short version: the failure rate of Intel CPUs in systems sold by Puget Systems is relatively low, due to their conservative BIOS settings. (Too bad they don't publish those.)

Oh yeah, forgot that on www.tenforums.com we had a cinebench leaderboard posted for quite a while. Check me out with my 5900x in position 14 and I see all of the core i9-10900k's below me (with exception of Doorules with his 10900XE in the 11th slot w which was a $1,000+ version) And remember, those higher 13th and 14th gen Intel's didn't exist when I posted my score. And no, mine isn't overclocked at all, it's running on an Air cooler, with a 3080 that is slightly undervolted with a frequency cap to reduce power consumption.

The I9-10900XE wasn't just relatively expensive. It was an HEDT (high end desktop) CPU: LGA2066, quad memory channels. It's impressive that its performance was bested by newer desktop CPUs.

I don't think it is fair to compare this high end Intel CPU or an AMD Threadripper CPU with "common" models such as Core-i3 to i7 or AMD Ryzen models. Also comparing just models of different categories (entry models, medium and high end models) is confusing. The best would be to compare an Intel model with the respective AMD model or from one generation to the other generation. This would be more fair. And for a better comparison all systems should have the same amount of RAM and same category of graphics card.

I agree, mostly.

But of all the CPUs in "pparks1's" post, the only HEDT one that I spot is the 10900XE.

I'm not very interested in a historical argument over Gen10 Intel vs Ryzen 5000.

It'd be nice to stay on topic as regards whether to get a high-end Intel Gen14 Intel or AMD's finest. I'd say Intel today. In a week or two, maybe AMD Ryzen 9000.

Incidentally: I believe that the Cinebench CPU tests are supposed to be GPU independent. (For R24, there's a separate GPU rendering test.) I'm unsure about RAM quantity, frequency, or timings.

I may watch that 47+ minute video someday. Does it refer to the Puget Systems findings at all?

I respect Gamer's Nexus, even though Steve only does a fair wookie imitation. I prefer reading over watching YouTube, though. (Us boomers are a vanishing breed, I suppose.)

I have watched some of their videos in the past. If memory serves, Steve was very critical of Intel running high-end Gen13 CPUs (or was it Gen14?) at high power/temperature, all to gain a few points in benchmarks. I didn't understand the criticism. Aren't gamers often pushing their systems, to squeeze out a few extra FPS? And if a CPU only lasts one year, that's no big deal, as it'll be due for an upgrade by then. ;-)

Well Steve does go on in his videos, is wrong about a number of things, but he is a consumer champion against abuse and deception by tech companies and is great at putting the pressure on them.
