Nope. SUCCESS but not desktop. "The process Explorer.exe with PID 5328 has been terminated". I am assuming now have to reboot, so here goes ...... rebooted

Nope. but PID 11520 replaced previous. All folders in explorer have returned to normal though but desktop is unchanged, desktop in explorer folders is still as desktop on screen

Try sfc /scannow. That tends to fix issue, especially with icons.

I got a local computer expert come down the tubes and he sorted it. It ended up as a registry fault. An entry used something called 'blank.ico' - he got rid and left me with a txt file to keep in case it happens again:


Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons

make sure only the default entry is in there if the blank folder appears on top of files again

How this issue started? A blank icon reminds me of some malware that they create a hidden folder and move all your USB flash drive files in that folder to think they are deleted. I would do a full scan with Superantispyware or Malwarebytes Antimalware and delete all results. If one of them find more than 500 entries, I would do a full scan with the other. If they find too many, I would consider to backup my data (hopefully not infected) and then format and do a clean Windows installation.

Search for malware with Superantispyware. It's not a virus as I can see.

I have just bought a programme called Fortect (delete post if needed), it has been 'so far so good' - still testing. I have it running on checking EVERY file in the laptop at present, i think it may pass :)
