Solved Word .doc desktop icons are white after Win 11 upgrade

Windows 11 Pro
Win 11 Pro 24H2. After in-place upgrade to Win 11, all the desktop icons held their images except the Word .doc ones, which are blank white (.docx and Excel .xlsx ones have images). They were there in Win 10. What might be causing this and the fix, other than saving them as .docx files? I tried Personalization>Themes>Desktop Icons, but didn't find any Word images. Thanks,

I have the same problem with a couple of desktop files - one a batch script and the other a PDF document. They've been there a while so I don't know when they changed. Copying the files via cut-and-paste to a new location, and then back, fixed them for me.

Which suggests a corrupted Icon or thumbnail cache.

I use Customizer God to replace the default system icons (folders, devices, network, sound) and after cumulative upgrades they are restored to default. I replace them again but sometimes I get mixed original and modified icons. Once I clear the icon and thumbnail cache I only see the modified icons as I should.

I'm at Option 3. In Windows Terminal, C:=users\[name]> DEL /A /F /Q "%localappdata%\IconCache.db"
returns the following:
Remove-Item: A positional parameter cannot be found that accepts argument '/F'.

Did you try Option Two, the Bat file? Seems to work for most. Depending on the cause.

I've taken the Options in order. In Option 2, It didn't seem to need unblocking.

You’re possibly running the DEL command inside Windows Terminal’s PowerShell?
PowerShell doesn’t interpret DEL the same way as Command Prompt.
Open Terminal, command prompt and try again. (Choose from the drop down)

I went back to Option 2, to make sure I'd run it correctly. After Step 7, running the .bat file and command instructions, both times the screen went black. I had to sign out and in to get restarted. I then ran the ico.reg each time.

You may be correct about the way I did Option 3. I'll try again.

Windows Terminal opened before and still opens PowerShell. Do I type Command Prompt, or am I already there?

There is a little drop arrow you can click on and select. But you have to be in Terminal as admin. > Right click Start menu > Select Terminal - Admin

You can just press Win key + S (Search)
Type CMD
Right click > Open as admin

I'm a little confused here. Am I opening Terminal, or Command Prompt as Admin? I use Open-Shell and an old IBM keyboard, so no Win key. Not sure how to open Terminal as Admin. Under Programs (Open-Shell), none of the Windows options shows Terminal.

If I open Search, the choice is Files/folders or People. I choose the first and type CMD and get a long list, none of which is Windows Terminal (the top one is clean.cmd).

Btw, in Windows Security seemingly during this process, Memory Integrity and Kernal-mode... have turned off.

In PowerShell type cmd and press ENTER to switch to Command Prompt (see the prompt change). Run the command. Type exit and press ENTER to switch back to PowerShell. The full path is

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

were username is your user name. If unsure execute dir at the C:\users folder to see which is your user folder.

Thanks. Although I rebooted after each attempt, nothing had changed. But just now I opened one of the files, made a change and was asked on closing to identify the program to be used for it, Word of course. Then I noticed that all the blank icons now showed the Word image. I'm not sure if that was the causative sequence, or something I did earlier fixed it, but problem solved.

That means that the file association (which application opens with) was lost for some reason and hence the plain white page (unknown file type) icon. Choosing Microsoft Word set back the association and you saw the Word icon.
