Any document in Word that has the autosave option set to on at the very top of the window is saved in the cloud.

That’s because the Ghacks article is talking about the existing functionality. Oddly, they posted a screenshot of that instead of the new thing. The thing posted by Brink and mentioned by BruceR is new.

My Word files are saved in my local OneDrive folder and synchronized in real-time in cloud OneDrive.
That's been my default for the past 18 years.
No update changes that.

AutoSave saves continuously to your OneDrive cloud storage.
AutoRecover saves at a preset interval to a folder on your computer.

The OneDrive cloud storage is linked to your Microsoft account. It does not require you to have OneDrive installed and active on your computer.

I have read that OneDrive cloud storage for Word requires you to have Microsoft 365 subscription. However, I have OneDrive cloud storage but don't have a Microsoft 365 subscription. I do have Word 2021 logged in with my Microsoft account. Does that mean that my documents are still saved to my OneDrive cloud storage?

Yes. Until you go into Word (and Excel) settings and change default save location.
