It might be, but for serious work I use Microsoft Word. Wordpad was the free substitute to do some quick word processing until you install Microsoft Office. I have it associated with .rtf files.

Jarte has rtf. on by default but you can save in plain text if you prefer. It used to be payware but in the last edition all the really useful features became unlocked for good.

I agree that the allure is probably not there today since virtually everyone has long since moved on and retrained their fingers and brains to use a different editor or editors. I still have a soft spot for WordStar, I used it for many years. We even made a WordStar clone for the PR1ME Computer in the 1980's when I worked for an aerospace company.

And if you are nostalgic, I consider it "sacrilege" to use any imitation. I would use the real thing, preferably on an old computer. Since this is not possible, I can settle for using the real thing on an emulator like DosBox. For those with old enough hardware to still have a parallel port, DosBox can use it to print directly to an old parallel printer. Otherwise we can make our USB printer accessible via network and connect to it from DosBox. I don't remember the procedure as I haven't done it, but it is in the documentation.

WordTsar has all the features and its portable. They used to have an installer but quickly figured out it was easier updating a portable because its a perpetual alpha by design. Its stable enough to be used as a daily driver.

To use it as daily driver, assuming it has the features you need, it must have the option to save as Word 97, at least, and read Word 97 and newer files. Support for open documents is not enough.

wrong - wordpad has wordprocessing capacity e.g. basic formatting options, indents etc. and it was native MS.

The point is that for many domestic users, it enabled nice looking output with little learning required.

To elevate things beyond that is somewhat pointless as there are already loads of respected free tools such as Libreoffice.

Sure there are loads of niche alternatives but they are basically "meh".

JCL was a part of my // JOB for 50 years and still is today as a contractor who doesn't know enough to retire. Some people had a difficult time with it; I always thought it was (sort of) logical even if the use of punctuation bordered on arcane.
