"Working on it..." in 22631.2129

I have more than one folder that when I click on it (system folders), I get "Working on it...." forever - no contents shown.

Here are some examples:
C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Local\Packages\MicrosoftWindows.Client.Core_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalCache
C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ParentalControls_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalCache
C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ParentalControls_cw5n1h2txyewy\SystemAppData
C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

They seem to be all over the place in AppData - although I thought I saw a folder that did this outside of AppData, now I can't find one. Is this a security setting I don't have? I checked folder permissions and I have access and am an Administrator.? Should I do something to fix it, like a SCANNOW or something? Or is this just a bug to report? I have never seen this before.

Sfc /scannow ...is just a tool, you can run it whenever you want.

If it finds anything that it can fix, fix after reboot or not fix,.. then also run this other tool...

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth




This is what you "want" to see after running sfc /scannow...

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?

sec /scannow completed fine with

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth also completed successfully.

Yet the problem remains - I tested one folder that went 6 minutes still showing "Working on it..." and I killed it then . I also tried booting into Safe Mode, it happens there too.

As another note, I have two laptops running the Beta Insider version, and it happens on both!

That very bug is corrected on the latest Dev build as stated in the release notes.
One has to assume a fix is forthcoming on the other channels.

  • Fixed an issue which was causing File Explorer to show “Working on it” in an empty folder.

Thank you again for spotting that in the Dev Build - I don't normally read them. Learned a good lesson, check other test release notes!!!

PS - I also learned Working on it only appears if the folder is empty - so now I really don't need it until it's fixed! Thanks again.

No, nothing to do. As @OAT says, this is a known bug in the 22631.2129 Beta build when looking at an empty folder. We all see it.

There is a workaround. When it's stuck on 'Working on it...' just click on any of the column titles (Name, Date modified, etc.) and it will clear the 'Working on it...' and show the correct 'This folder is empty'.

I'm using the latest Beta version and I'm having this problem regarding the Recycle Bin. If I delete something the contents show up as usual, no problems. But once I empty the Recycle Bin, I get the “Working on it” BS. Hopefully it gets sorted asap for all the upcoming releases. I've done all the possible scans and nothing, as of now, solves the issue.

Well you would, it's an empty folder now :D
The same workaround clears it, just click on a column title such as 'Name'.

Tbh, in the past when it was empty it had “This folder is empty” or something similar. 🤷‍♂️

Yes, that's what it's supposed to say. It's a known bug. There should fix in a newer build, see post #3 for more.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine.
