I am so glad to find an old Live Mail lover. When it comes to managing multiple email accounts (I have 4), the only thing I've found that comes close to it is Thunderbird, but out of familiarity I gravitate back to WLM because I've used it for so long. I never was able to set up a Yahoo account in WLM but that's fine by me as I have suggested to everyone I know to steer clear of Yahoo email. I would never use an email provider that has so little security in place. Like you, I agree the mail app sucks.

It just shows what a great email client it is @glasskuter that so many still use it even though it’s not supported. While I don’t use this feature often I have found in the past that being able to view the email properties allows me to check the sender authentication in more detail.
Also that the junk mail folders doesn’t have a preview pane.

I have my Yahoo account on Live Mail, it does require 2-step authentication to be turned on via your Yahoo account & then an app specific password created & used with Live Mail.

I'm trying to setup a windows 11 machine to sync with yahoo mail in any way and it's been a nightmare.
I've cleared windows mail settings before and after failed attempts.
  • I can log into the account on mail.yahoo.com in a browser.
  • I have access to both recover accounts and both recovery phone numbers.
  • Every time I add the yahoo account in windows mail (I'm 100% positive the password is correct) the account becomes locked.
  • I can log out of the webmail interface and log in with the same password without issue.
  • I tried setting up the account manually using IMAP/POP settings. Windows mail opened, tried to sync, then gave a useless error.
  • I tried generating an app specific code (specifying "windows mail") and their form immediately says it can't generate one.

I thought maybe there was a stand-alone yahoo app for windows 11 in the microsoft store but all I can find is the android ported version running on the Amazon app system, which is also trash.

Maybe even after the 1hr security cooldown there's still some kind of double secret probation, meaning I might need to wait longer.

I'll wait a while longer and try generating another app specific password with 2 factor.

I'm not sure if they are forcing two factor or what but this is all a bunch of bullsh!t. I tried calling yahoo premium support but the agent was a MF NPC without any empowerment or capacity for free thought outside of the script so I rage quit. I'm telling the droid one thing and when she repeats the symptom back to me it's a been changed to something that isn't my problem.

I have 2 Yahoo Mail Accounts. Both work OK with the Web Browser interface, Edge or Chrome.

Mail App, one of the Yahoo Accounts is OK, the other is slower and you have to keep using the search function.

Windows Live Mail 2012 (out of support for 5+ years) never worked at all on either Yahoo Account using IMAP.

MS have given no answers on my Feedback, so I'm just waiting until the new Outlook App comes out in 2024. Hopefully an improvement. It is still in Beta, not worth trying at the moment unless you want to be a free tester.

I used the Yahoo! option in the Add account box in the Mail App FWIW. Same for either Windows 10 or 11.

Yahoo works for me with IMAP under Live Mail @Helmut I had to use an app specific password instead of the usual account details & is still working.

Waste of time, there is no future in WLM. From what I have seen of the new Outlook App it looks good.
I’m sure it is for you @Helmut but for me the inbuilt Mail app lacks features especially the new version as it is the same as Outlook - combined inbox & combined other folders & ability to check the email’s properties/source to confirm it is genuine/check for spam are just two.
