Is that your way of saying your original point maybe wasn't quite as important as you suggested :-) I do agree a clean install is always ideal but it's a huge undertaking and modern OS do a much better job of transitioning between hardware.

What I might try is installing clean on a free partition and seeing how quick that is to boot... :unsure:

Well I tested on a clean install and it was indeed notably quicker. I also tried safe mode on my current install and that was much quicker too. Which means something is slowing the full mode down. And something is also make it hang longer on 'restarting' than it should. How do I identify the culprit here?

The only tool that can help you identify the culprit is Windows Performance Toolkit.
