2 monitors question

win10 64 bit 20h2 ver. now it is 22h2
i run 24h2 26100.3915 and i have a laptop with a monitor over the laptop screen so the laptop screen is off and the monitor screen is on so i can see the monitor as it is a 24" vs. the 15" on the laptop.

anyway i may have a need to run a security program and i would like to have that running on a separate monitor so i do not have to click a tab and then have to leave the main screen on the monitor. now i have it set to show only on the 2nd screen. so if i was to add another monitor using the hdmi port as the monitor is now using the vga port can i do this or will i have to turn on the laptop and cover that screen so it is not a nuisance?

You can run two external monitors or you can run two externals and the laptop as a 3rd

To run two and duplicate the laptop screen on one of the externals, duplicate the laptop in the Display Settings.
To run two externals and have the laptop as a 3rd monitor, don’t duplicate.

My wifes laptop.

Below, if “Duplicate Desktop on 1 and 3” wasn’t set, you would see 3 monitors in this setting image below.
As it is: 1 (The laptop screen) is being duplicated to Monitor 3 (The 3rd External)

Just click the download arrow where it shows Duplicate Desktop on 1 and 3, to see the configerations available.

If you really want to maximise your workflow and you have the laptop and two external monitors, don’t duplicate the laptop monitor.
You could use the laptop monitor for medial things like running a scan and still be using the other two monitors independently. Therefore you would have 3 monitors running independently.

well i now have the laptop off as i have the monitor scree setting down over the laptop. but i can still see maybe 2" of the laptop along the bottom and when it is on it becomes a nuisance, so i have it turned off now. so if i set up another separate monitor screen i still would like the laptop screen off. if i need the laptop i just disconnect it from the hp dock station and then the laptop turns on and the monitor goes off and so would a 2nd. monitor.

so as long as i know it is possible i will get another 15" monitor and set it up to run the security tab. i know i can grab that and slide it over to the next monitor. thanks

Perhaps in the future you could contemplate something like this, so you can utilize all monitors and maximise your workflow

Yes, sorry, Bob, I meant as well as the larger screen. It just seems a shame to not utilize the laptop screen (with the TWO external monitors) as it could be used to do things you don’t need to focus on, like the scan.

Then you would have that, and the joy of running 2 extra, larger externals also.

It’s not a fetish, it’s a necessity. Theres actually one missing ATM, there's also a 22” touchscreen drawpad/monitor which I’ve lent to my wife.
