I have my MS account ever since beginning of internet, Hotmail is one of safest E-mail accounts and account itself was most helpful.

What's bad is how microsoft constantly tries to have you make one even if you don't want to. There are other threads y'all can read about this, I don't want to get too much off topic :)

@cereberus in my settings all backup options are greyed out since I have a local account, but I will dive deeper into it, thanks

6. You watch MS marketing videos and believe they were made by humans.

Nothing, provided that you also have a local, password-protected Admin user account to log into if your MSAccount does not let you log in.
Local accounts have fewer moving parts so there's less to get jammed up.

'Backup & Restore (Windows 7)' is still there in the Control Panel if you go looking for it (don't use it!).
Just doesn't get shown anywhere else now, not even in a search from Start.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

I still avoid using my MS account to sign in to any of my PCs, but that's for the practical reason that should it ever get corrupted then you risk being locked out of your PC until you fix it (seen too many posts from users in that situation).

I'm perfectly happy to sign in for my apps though, the Store, Widgets, etc.

Some people decide to use MS account unwillingly, but they still want to remain anonymous, so they refuse to give their phone number and they use a throwaway email. When something goes wrong, they can not login, nor recover the account, so they blame MS again. :whistle:

Doubly so for 22H2. It looks to be a full Feature Update, not a minor feature update through a little enablement package like we've got used to with W10 these past few years.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

I’m a member of several forums & I find I’m still surprised on how many users do not have any backup at all, so when told they need to clean install Windows they’re reluctant. It takes less time to backup using imaging software than it does to clean install Windows & reinstall everything again.

@Bastet I look at the threads right here on this one and bury my head in my hands. I might could understand if one had to buy a backup program or if the process was difficult to do, but we know neither is so. The biggest problem is that people are too complacent in thinking that nothing bad will ever happen to them. To me, backing up is the same for my computer as changing the oil in my car...preventive maintenance. I say to everyone I know, "Having a backup is not for IF your computer has trouble, but WHEN. It's gonna happen some time or another."

I use the commercial (paid) version of Macrium Reflect to back up my data drive nightly and my system drive weekly, all scheduled so I don't even have to think about it. I guess it's my professional background. :)

Quite right, all kinds of excuses. including using Recycle bin for temporary storage or hanging everything on desktop. I used baby pictures as an example but there are also important documents, lost passwords, you name it. One off things that can never be replaced. total loss and no insurance. On mechanical HDDs chances for retrieval were pretty good if disk works at all but with SSDs it's in domain of deep forensics at FBI/CIA/NSA/GRU...
