22H2-A good time to develop a backup plan if you haven't already.

I make a Full backup of the System drive on a Sunday morning, followed by daily incrementals. If there's a Windows update or I'm installing a driver, I make another Incremental prior to starting (unless I've not used the PC since the morning backup). My data (on a separate physical disk) is all synced with OneDrive and I also make a file and folder backup of it every 3 days to an external SSD.

Games are a nightmare to re-download if needed, I wish .exe or .msi files were available when purchasing. Doesn't take too long to download games on a fast internet connection though.

Nope! I did have all my data backed up though.

Bummer.
I dropped a flip phone in a post hole full of wet concrete a few years ago, but I lucked out.
Turned it off, removed the battery, squirted it off with a hose, and let it dry in the sun.
After a few hours it was working again.

I’ve just read a store on someone who ran over their iPhone 12 with a 5000lb roller & it still worked.
Yes, even phones require some form of backup. IDevices have iCloud & also you can have iTunes run a full backup.
Android usually have their own options for backup.

Thanks for posting that. It prompted me to check the current price {I bought two last year during a sale}.
They are going for £34.99 over here at the moment so I bought a spare - www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08GXXKY6P [from Amazon itself not one of its Marketplace sellers] - both of the originals are used for rather crucial functions so I could not resist a rainy day spare at that price.

I have a redneck cell phone story for ya. About 3 years ago, my sister and I visited a country cemetery. As we took off down the road to leave she yelled "My phone!" and slammed on the brakes. The old iphone 6 flew off the top of the car with such force it skidded down the highway about 100 feet, hit a ditch where it flipped a couple of times, through a fence, landing in a pasture. She goes to get it but comes back empty handed crying "oooh, you do it. I can't."

Thinking it was probably broken, I crawl under the fence until I spy it. Out of several hundred acres of clean pasture, it chose a pile of cow poop to land in. Now I don't mean a cow patty, but poop, the fresh green kind that goes splat. Being the good sister I am, I fished it out and put it in a Walmart sack until I could clean it up as best I could. Aside from a few scratches, it was none the worse for wear. Being of a finicky nature, she never was as attached to it after that and I wondered why.

Fast forward a year. All I had ever had was an old flip phone for emergencies. I didn't want a smart phone and swore I would never buy one because I hate phones. She buys a new iphone and insists I take her old one. To this day, dried cow manure occasionally works it's out of the speaker holes and yes, when it's humid, it still smells a little like rotten eggs. It makes me wonder if she hates me.

Through it all, everything on it has been backed up to icloud, though.

The 1TB one is £163 for us.

And the 512GB one is now £70. So I just got in before that £34 offer ended.

Typical do my System Image backups on Sundays for all Systems, then Differential every 3 days, and OneDrive For Offsite of Photos and Such ((Not easy for me to get to a bank for safe deposit box to put an external there, so do my backups best i can) and Incremental prior to any driver update usually on systems here.

Slept in today so far didn't get it done for Main Desktop, but might do this one later tonight, and Laptop in morning, and 3rd system maybe over night later on today

This is certainly an area where Apple gets it right. They have included Time Machine right in the OS. It automatically takes backups of your files on a regular basis and it constitutes an image backup. You can use that image to restore your current machine, you can use it to move to a new machine. All you have to do is connect an external hard drive and mark it for use with Time Machine. No rescue media is required as it's baked right into the Mac and you can access it when the box POSTS.

I wonder what fraction of users actually know this and use the tool?

Windows 10/11 have an image backup tool (deprecated feature) as well - not as slick as 3rd party tools, but even then, majority of public have no idea what it does or how to use it.

It should be pretty high.

1.). When you turn on the Mac for the first time, the OOBE experience asks if you would like to restore from a time machine backup.
2). If you take in your Mac for any service, the first time that the Apple store asks is whether you backed up your data before you start
3). A very common method of upgrading to a new physical mac is to take a time machine backup and restore it on the new machine.
