Hi all,
I'd like to apply always the lasts KB to my system during the image deploy but, I notice that for 24H2, it cause some driver corruption at the first boot of the system.

My steps are:

1) create master image from tech PC
Install 24H2 from USB drive.
Apply all driver only, I'm my case I use the RTM version for OEM
Sysprep with generalize in audit mode and capture image.

2)Apply master image to Enduser PC
Apply the .wim via WinPE and apply offline with DISM the current KB (.net and last comulative patch)
Boot the system in audit mode.
Test the hardware.
Sysprep the system in OOBE mode for resell.

I notice that if apply the comulative KB (at the moment the last one is KB5043080) at the first boot in audit mode, I have these two driver not loaded (in this case is a laptop)

If I apply the same Master image, with the same scripts but without apply the last comulative KB, all the driver are loaded at the same first boot in audit mode.

Now, apply KB offline is compliance for Microsoft but not working...
Any other with my same problem and that have find a solution?

At the moment the available patch for 24H2 are 2, .Net and comulative.
KB5042098.msu .Net
KB5043080 comulative.
If I apply only the .Net the issue is not present.

Regards

Microsoft has been including driver updates with Windows Updates.
Most of the time, this is not a problem.

Sometimes though, it will corrupt already installed drivers.

The solution is to block drivers included in Windows Updates...

When I install Windows and all my drivers, the above tutorial is the first thing I do.
THEN... I do Windows Updates.

NOTE: I gave you 10 reaction points because you filled out your system specs. :-)

when you prepare a master image for deploy the system must be offline, without any internet connection.
The driver must be loaded from installer package, exe or msi or inf.

How you make it work (with the tutorial), I don't know.
But I'm pretty sure that a driver included with Windows Update is the cause of your problem.

Maybe @hsehestedt or @Kari would know how to include it in your system image.
Or maybe how to automatically apply it just after the install.

Option #2 in that tutorial is just a reg patch.
Maybe a batch file to automatically "run" the reg patch, just after install?

Maybe something in here?

I think that you don't understand me, I never mentioning online Windows Update.
When I prepare and apply a master image, I do it always offline.
After have install a fresh Windows system, without ony specifdied driver loaded, I install one bye one with offline installer all of them (it is different every time on the kind of hardware of your system) and, after have install all, and check that all driver are loaded, I'm in audit mode during the driver installation, I run the sysprep and image was captured.
In this moment all driver are installed and work.

The issue incoming when I apply to target machine the capture image.
If I apply to this image the last comulative KB some driver goes in faul but if I don't apply any KB the applied captured master image work at 100% without any driver conflict.

As I said I apply the KB offline via WinPE during the installation scripts.

Moreover i try to apply to captured image also the previous 24H2 KB and I alwasy get the driver fault.
I try current, previous and previous of previous lso

That doesn't matter.

IF... the driver update is included with the Windows Update.... it is still in there.
It doesn't matter if you install the update offline or online.

You already "know" the answer. You just don't want to believe it. :-)

I notice that if apply the comulative KB (at the moment the last one is KB5043080) at the first boot in audit mode, I have these two driver not loaded (in this case is a laptop)

There's only two ways that could happen.

1. You have the wrong drivers or they aren't installing properly.
2. There are driver(s) IN the KB5043080 update, that are corrupting the installed drivers.

IF... #1 is the problem, you would have noticed it "before" you installed the Windows Update.

You need to do this, "before" you "capture the image"...

please forgot for a while windows update and all post reply and also consider this.

master image with offline KB applied under WinPE (this is most important!!!) cause driver corruption.
master image without any KB applied under WinPE but applied offline in audit mode (or online in OOBE mode) don't have any problem.

after have apply the image under WinPE and start it the system do 2 reboot before enter in audit mode

I want to apply kb during under winpe during WinPE scripts automation to save time

I can't help with that. I "mentioned" the two people that probably can help, in post #4
They both do Sysprep.

BUT... if you do not have the problem "before" you install the KB5043080, and you do have the problem after you install it, then KB5043080 is causing the problem.

no, the cause is not the specified KB but when you apply it to master image.
If I apply the KB under WInPE I got driver corruption, if I apply the same offline KB manually in audit mode, (when windows load the desktop) it's loaded but without any fail.

@Mamukata,

I have also had some difficulties with Sysprep images and 24H2, although it sounds like you may be getting further than I have so far. In my case, I create my new Sysprep image, but when I try to install from that image, it gets as afar as copying all the files to system to which Windows is being installed, I see the message that the system will be rebooted in a few seconds, and then I get a pop-up dialog that simply says that the installation failed.

One other thing to note: I've been approaching this mainly from a different angle because I tend not to create a sysprep image most of the time. Rather than create a new syspreped image, I have simply been injecting Windows updates directly into my Windows images. When that is done, I perform an installation (either manually or using unattended installation) but in every single instance, at the start of Setup, Windows throws up a screen saying that a driver needed to access my storage is missing. The weird thing is that if I open diskpart at that point, I can see all the storage in my system just fine.

So, yes, there are some odd issues related sysprepped / updated media at this time. @garlin pointed out something recently: One of the big changes with the new setup in 24H2 seems to be that Windows setup always treats the installation as an upgrade, even if you are performing a clean install. Have you noticed that even if you do a clean install, you end up with a "Windows.old" folder?

So, I'm still struggling with this myself, but I have to admit that I have placed my troubleshooting on hold lately. We are so close to final release that I thought that I might simply wait until I have a final release in hand before I go nuts trying to figure this out.

@garlin is far more advanced on this topic than am I, maybe he will have some other thoughts or insights.

If I can find anything further, I will certainly post back here, but for now, I too am a bit stumped on what is happening.

NOTE: One reason that I have been holding back on testing and waiting for final release is that Microsoft also typically releases a new ADK and a bunch of technical notes on the same day that a final release is made public. I am hoping that there will be some newly published materials then that will help us sort through this whole mess.

I don't have a specific insight, but my gut feeling from reading the different install and sysprep stories is the current 24H2 build has a broken Servicing Stack. Normal servicing operations appear to work, but silently fail on deployment. It's like parts of the install are entirely missing when they're clearly present in the deployment image.

Hopefully MS recognizes there's a severe problem and pauses 24H2 rollout until they figure out what's going on.

Hi,
in your answer you call another problem that 24H2 have ( the new wizard setup, the Windows.OLD folder we can discuss in another post there is aworkaround for fix it, you need to use the old wirzard! windows.old desappear)

Your way to clone a already confgured system is not the right way becasue Windows already have generate the SSID and if you clone that system you can have problem inside the network.

Your problem than use a sysprepped image that come in loop is also very strange but is not the topoic of this post.

The RTM release of 24H2 are online (only for OEM) from last May and we are forced to use this image and tools for integrate the other language and for create the customization.
