25H2 Steps Recorder

Although MS have declared Steps Recorder to be a deprecated feature, it is still available in 25H2 (Yay!!!!).

If you have never used it, it is a little known gem to help create windows tutorials. I even created a couple for the tenforums site using it.

None of the alternatives suggested by MS (Steps Recorder deprecation - Microsoft Support)
have remotely a similar functionality.

The interface is about as simple as you could get - start record, stop record, save recording.
It saves pages after each click - it is not a continuous video recording tool.





You click on start record, do steps you need and save recording.

The recording is in a web .mht file (stored in a zip file).




There is a lot of text guff in the .mht file, but if you open it using MS Word (or other similar tool), it is a simple matter to tidy up the file, edit it with more comments, add section headings blah blah blah and save as pdf or word.

I find this much quicker than doing a video recording, playing it back, pausing to take screen dumps, paste in Word, annotate etc.

This is a simple demo showing steps if you deleted an item from the recycle bin.

It takes a little bit of practice but somebody with your skill set would soon get the hang of it in no time at all.

If you make a mistake, just backtrack and redo steps.

Then just delete the erroneous steps in Word (tip:do that first and renumber steps at end).

My PC isn’t setup yet to check, but does it have an option to hide the steps recorder when taking the screen? I see that it is visible with every step.
When working with a solid coloured background, it wouldn’t be an issue as you could paste a rectangle with the same colour as background, over the top of it.
