Using Windows 11.
Stupidly turned on Pause Updates a few weeks? ago.
There is NO resume option. Right now my screen shows 2 updates available and 1 is downloading, but is stuck at 29% for almost 24 hrs. It also shows other updates available, but the button to start them is greyed out.
I have researched online and do NOT see the screen that they show I should have, with a resume button. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

How do I restart without install updates?. I don't understand. I have tried restarting, but it just comes back to same place.
I am not that tech savy so you need to explain a bit more to me.
Don't even know how to open in safe mode
WHen my computer start up, I don't get a screen I am used to seeing from the past that tells which F button to press to open in safe mode.
I am scared of screwing things up.

Once you are on the desktop... in the Settings > Run box, type: msconfig
Then choose like shown in the pic... and click "Apply"
(it works the same in Win 10 and Win 11)

Image1.png Image2.png

To get out of Safe Mode, just type msconfig in the Settings > Run box again...
Then uncheck Safe boot, and click Apply...

I would try going into Safe Mode, and very quickly going to the Advanced options and seeing if you can choose a date, from the drop down.

If that doesn't work, try doing a System Restore to a time before this download started, and again, go to Advanced options and set a date.

I've never messed with pausing updates. I just make a full backup, before and after Microsoft Tuesday.
That pretty much covers me. I'm on Win 11 Home, so as soon as I logon Windows Update starts downloading, if there are any updates available.

Then I just let the update go through. If there's any problems, I can just restore from a backup.

If you're on Win 11 Pro, you have more options. But fighting MS about updates is a losing battle on any version.
So come up with a plan (like backups), to take back control... somewhat.

Press the Windows and "R" keys simultaneously, type or paste "msdt /id WindowsUpdateDiagnostic" into the "Open" box and click "OK".

Consider performing an in place upgrade repair using the latest Windows 10 iso: 21H2.

During the in place upgrade repair you can decline or allow Windows updates.

For the first attempt allow updates during the repair.

If it fails then repeat without allowing updates during the repair.

Before the in place upgrade repair uninstall any of these non-Microsoft software:
a) antivirus
b) firewall
c) drive encryption

For any failures run setupdiag and post a share link into this thread using one drive, drop box, or google drive

So come up with a plan (like backups), to take back control... somewhat.
OK.
This is what I have tried.
Opened in safe mode and deleted all folders in softwaredistribution/download.
Rebooted. went to settings. No Change. Still stuck on 1 file downloading a 29%.
Closed computer.
Rebooted in boot state.
typed msconfig
went to gernerl tab: clicked on selective startup
unchecked load items startup
WOULD NOT let me check load system service and original boot config. It was greyed out.

So I am back to square 1, except all of the folder and files I deleted in the softwaredistribution\download
Hvae computer restarted in normal mode, and nothing has changed.

Getting too many responses with different things to do, and don't know what to try next.
I really appreciate your help.
THought about trying a restore point, but I only have 2 and the earliest is 2 weeks ago.
Don't even know why I pushed the pause button when I did. Want the system to just update as needed.

You lost me with doing the backup before and after Microsoft Tuesday.

I have never done a backup before.

Thanks for your patience. I really want to get this resolved and back to normal.

Alan

the KB5007262 is abit troublesome .. just restart the computer (choose without install updates) .. the get ack to Windows Update section to release the PAUSE
What do you mean by "just restart the computer (choose without install updates). DO you mean to completely reinstall wwindows?
If so, it came preinstalled. How would I go about reinstalling it?. Is it built into the system?

Says it fond a problem and fixed it, but nothing has changed. The screenshot I have posted back at the beginning of this thread still looks the same, and meanwhile, I deleted a bunch of files from another suggestion, and I don't know what that effect will cause.
Thanks for your help

As I mentioned earlier... just use System Restore and choose a restore point before this problem started.

As for making backups... that's pretty easy. Just use a program like Macrium Reflect (free)...

Just scroll down and get Reflect 8 Free, here: Reflect Free Edition

All backup software really does, is make a copy of your Windows install, and saves it to a different drive (internal or external).
The backup will be about 1/2 the size of your Windows install.

And here's a simple guide for "taking care of your computer"...
