CopyTo_MoveTo_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove "Copy To folder" and "Move to folder" to the context menu for all users in Windows 11.

When you press and hold or right click on selected file(s) and folder(s), click/tap on Show more options, and click/tap on Copy To folder, it will copy them to a location you select immediately.

When you press and hold or right click on selected file(s) and folder(s), click/tap on Show more options, and click/tap on Move to folder, it will remove them from their current location and move them to a location you select immediately.

While you must me signed in as an administrator to add or remove "Copy To folder" and "Move to folder" to the context menu, all users will be able to use the context menu if added.

To also Copy file(s) regardless of the source and target destination, hold down the CTRL key while you drag and drop the file(s).

To also Move file(s) regardless of the source and target destination, hold down the SHIFT key while you drag and drop the file(s).

; Move To folder
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\{C2FBB631-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}]

3 To Remove "Copy To folder" and "Move To folder" Context Menu

This is the default setting.

This is helpful, but changing the contents of the context menu via registry edits is not a suitable method for most users. MS needs to provide a comprehensive tool to manage the context menu. This is long overdue.

I was very comfortable with Windows XP, then VERY satisfied WIndows 7...then MS had to do what they tend to do: fix what isn't wrong, add more "features" (ie: unneeded complexity). Its been downhill ever since 7. I'm even considering the dread iMac. I've explored several versions of Linux, and learned that I don't want to be mucking about in the OS, I want to do graphics, word processing, etc. Although I can, with great effort, find my way around to do some minor troubleshooting tweaking, I don't want to do that anymore. Tech has become like an old British sports car: fun but not worth the trouble.

@Brink Thanks so so so much for this tutorial! There are quite a few things missing from 11 that I used on 10, and this lack of being able to "move" rather than copy, cut/copy/paste has been doing my head in. I considered using Winaero Tweaker to bring the old ribbon back in Explorer, but this might be an even better alternative that preserves the Win 11 look of Explorer.

Just one thing before I download and run the batch file - could this reg change potentially cause any problems with Windows Updates? Esp ones which involve Explorer of the context menu? I remember some posts on other forums about problems with updates failing or causing issues when people had tweaked settings like with classic shell and shutup 10.

Hello, :-)

No worries. This will have no affect on Windows Update.

Awesome. Thanks @Brink. Going to get a brew underway and then I'm going to download it. Really appreciate these wonderful tutorials.

EDIT - Works like a charm! Yay! Might even update another machine to 11 now this particular headache can be overcome.

Ridiculous that such a basic and fundamental function would be removed and require reg hacks to get back though. Grrrr. I value the move function when I'm wanting to shift many GBs of high resolution videos to an external SSD. The clipboard just cannot cope with that volume, and copying taking four times as long as simply moving.

Hello Jim, :-)

Yes, they should all still work in Windows 11.

Of course the Tablet Mode ones will not since it's no longer in Windows 11.

Hi Brink!
I found this forum after trying many useless tricks and suggestions in order to solve the problem of "Moving" files.
My old PC passed away few weeks ago and I had to replace it with a new one with Win 11, since then I had quite an hard life working with my tousands of pics and drawings.
I miss Win XP and Win 7, even Win 10 was way better then this stupid Win 11.
You saved my life!
With your help I've been able to solve my problems of moving files from folders and units.
I have registered here only to say "Thank you!!"
