Accounts Add or Remove Security tab on Properties Page in Windows 11

  • Staff
Security_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the Security tab from drive, file, folder, and shortcut properties for all users in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

You can right click on a drive, file, folder, or shortcut on a NTFS formatted volume and click/tap on Properties to see a Security tab.

The Security tab allows users to change owner and modify permissions for access rights of a drive, file, folder, or shortcut.

You must be signed in as an administrator to add or remove the Security tab on the Properties page.

EXAMPLE: Security tab on Properties page

Here's How:

1 Do step 2 (add) or step 3 (remove) below for what you would like to do.

2 Add Security tab to Properties Page for All Users

This is the default setting

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

Add_Security_tab_to_Properties_for_all_users.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{1f2e5c40-9550-11ce-99d2-00aa006e086c}]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{1f2e5c40-9550-11ce-99d2-00aa006e086c}]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{1f2e5c40-9550-11ce-99d2-00aa006e086c}]

3 Remove Security tab from Properties Page for All Users

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

Remove_Security_tab_from_Properties_for_all_users.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{1f2e5c40-9550-11ce-99d2-00aa006e086c}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{1f2e5c40-9550-11ce-99d2-00aa006e086c}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\{1f2e5c40-9550-11ce-99d2-00aa006e086c}]

4 Save the REG file to your desktop.

5 Double click/tap on the downloaded REG file to merge it.

6 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7 You can now delete the downloaded REG file if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

I am having problems with not being able to see my security tab. If I select an individual file I can see 4 tabs including security. If I select 2 or more I only see general & details tab. I have tried this on a desktop with win 11 pro, desktop with win 10 pro & a laptop with win 11 pro. These are all home PC's not used on a business network. This applies to all drives & files. This is a fairly recent change because I have been able to select multiple files & change security permissions previously.
I have tried the suggested methods using GPedit, regedit & the regedit script & it makes no difference.
Greg Carmack on the Microsoft Community website has been assisting & suggested I ask if you have any ideas how to fix this?
Many thanks

It seems you have to put all the files in a "folder", then use the Security tab on the folder's property sheet.

Then maybe... Take ownership of the folder, and checkmark this box ???

Thanks for reply Ghot, but I dont think this is correct. I have just checked permissions on 2 files to ensure they are identical & the security tab is not visible. In any case if you wanted to change 2 or more files to same permissions you would select & edit permissions to change.

I'm thinking that when you select multiple files... you can't get a Security tab for them.
Maybe that's new, I dunno. But it kind of makes sense.

If you put all the files in a folder... you've changed from multiple things, to one thing... the folder.
And we know that ONE thing... CAN have a Security tab.

Once all the files are in a folder...then you can use the folder's Security tab to change permissions for the folder, and all child objects IN the folder??

I'm just guessing here. Permissions are confusing, to say the least. :-)

Ghot, agree that permissions can tie my brain in knots.
All I can add is that I can select folder & have a security tab. I am sure that in the past I have been able to select multiple files & edit permissions.
I guess in most cases selecting folder & acting on all files would be fine but there are certain situations where you don't want to edit everything & it would be a right pain to do 100's of files individually.
Anyway, thanks for your thoughts & let me know if anything else occurs.
