Personalization Add "Turn off display" Context Menu in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to add a Turn off display desktop context menu that will let users Turn off display or Lock computer and Turn off display on demand in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

By default, You can specify a screen timeout for how long the PC sits inactive without user activity before all connected displays automatically turn off.

When your display turns off, you would just need to move the mouse, touch the touchpad or touchscreen, click a mouse or touchpad button, or press a key for the display(s) to turn back on.

There may be times when you would like to turn off the display or lock computer and turn off display on demand instead.


While you must be signed in as an administrator to add or remove the "Turn off display" context menu, all users will be able to use the context menu.

It is required to click/tap on Show more options first by default, then click/tap on Turn off display.

Q: In Option #1 does the nircmd.exe file need to remain in the System32 folder while "Turn off display" is added to the Context menu?

The context menu runs nircmd.exe from the System32 folder, so it does need to stay there.

If really wanted, you could change the path for the command in the registry for a different location though.

System32 is fine.
I saw it called in the reg file, but wasn't sure if it was a one time thing, or would happen every time.

Option #2 said it was OK to remove. Option #1 didn't say that it should remain, so I thought I'd ask.

It's a great Context menu item though. When I leave the house I always use the screen saver option so it will go to the log on screen if anyone tries to use the keyboard or mouse. This method would be a lot easier.

Q: Does this work on Windows 10 as well?
A: Why yes it does. :-)

...and nircmd.exe is only 116KB

I followed the instructions of "Option One". This is shown when right clicking on the desktop:

Just to confirm, did you download the NirCmd file, unblock it, and moved it to your System32 folder?

Here is a pic of my System32 folder and the .zip file you should have downloaded...

You should have downloaded the 64 bit NirCmd zip file. Right clicked it and chose: Properties
Then put a check mark in the "Unblock" box, and click Apply.
Then grab the NirCmd.exe file and drag and drop it into your System32 folder.

THEN, you do the reg patch.

I'm on Windows 10 at the moment, but the "Turn off display" works for me on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Remember, that all Windows 11 versions are 64 bit.

I'm now on Windows 11 Home 22621.900 and I just tested it and "Turn off display" still works.

BUT... the thing I really like about this method is the... "Lock computer and turn off display".
I can just click that when leaving the computer for an extended period, and the display is off AND if anyone tries to use the computer, they get my Lock Screen, and need to enter my password. ;-)

Makes me feel really secure. Sort of like...

I've updated the context menu to use this command for both Turn off display and Lock computer and Turn off display items now.

If you like, try the new updated version to see how it works for you. You'll only need to download the new Add_Turn_off_display_to_desktop_context_menu.reg file in the tutorial and merge it. It'll update the old version for you.

Even if I had unzipped it and moved nircmd.exe to C:\Windows\System32? Did I miss that step above in the instructions?

The same, does not work here.

When I click a .lnk with this

the display obviously is switched off and the music, too. Respectively the comes from the notebook speakers.

Yes, sounds really nice. But I just wanted the display to switch on when touching the mousepad, moving the mouse pointer, etc. That does also work?

Try running the reg patch again.

Although I don't understand the different Windows language thing... that could be the problem?
You might have to temporarily set Windows to English... and then run the reg patch?

I honestly don't know what happens to the registry when the Windows language changes.
